You know what else is uncalled for? Sending aliens away, and then calling them back again. Deadly aliens! Aliens of...death!

unrelated, but I was skimming by and thought your icon read, "Green-haired Babies". It confused me for a while because that lady does not look like a baby.

Huh? I think you're reading way too much into that scene. Leela wanted to stay--she didn't want to hop back into the TARDIS like Tegan did when she was accidentally left behind by the Fifth Doctor.

Also, it's 70s Who. It's a hell of a lot cheesier and certainly less angsty because the show didn't take itself seriously like RTD's/Moffat's Who.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-05 03:57 am (UTC)(link)
Er, I think the OP means that when you're saying goodbye to your friend because you're getting married and not going to travel with him any more, it's not exactly nice if he skedaddles while you're trying to say that you'll miss him. I mean, just because she wanted to leave doesn't mean she didn't give a crap about the Doctor anymore.

I don't think he was being cold or anything though. It seemed like he just couldn't handle a big goodbye scene because he was upset and didn't want to say so. Leela probably understood.

The Doctor don't give a fuck.

Well, tbh he acted kind of douchey quite a few times in the Classic Series when his companions (or he himself) decided they were going leave, not just with Leela. Like, Seven tried to physically chase Mel right out of the ship until she insisted he stop and say goodbye to her properly.

Besides, even if he was kind of a dick, the way he gave her that big awkward fake smile and then pressed his hands and face against the door after slamming it, and murmured "I'll miss you too, savage" when he knew she couldn't hear really got to me in a weird way. Dunno how to explain it, it was just sad.

Can't let human bitches get too familiar time dawg.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-05 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
Not to nitpick but Leela isn't human. She was from an alien planet. She also stayed on Gallfery and hooked up with a Gallferian.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-05 07:43 am (UTC)(link)
Not to nitpick, but I think you'll find it's Gallifrey, and he was a Gallifreyan.

Just imagine him quickly slamming the door shut for his own needs--because he's on the other side trying to keep it together. Yet another one of his beloved friends has decided to leave him and he can't beg for them to stay, even if he wants to. He has to let them go, even if it means he's going to be lonely again. He has to let her think he doesn't care to make it easier for both of them...

(Anonymous) 2013-03-05 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
Or maybe he really REALLY needed to take a leak?

(Anonymous) 2013-03-05 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
Four didn't do well with emotional goodbyes and stuff. I mean look at his goodbye with Sarah Jane.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-05 05:14 pm (UTC)(link)
He cared enough to find the right landmass and time period, what more do you want?

(Anonymous) 2013-03-05 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe not very nice, but in character.

The Doctor (all of him) hates goodbyes, and he has a lot of trouble with his emotions (with Four as one of the more alien and disconnected Doctors). He doesn't know how to deal with it, so he just does the typical Doctor thing and runs off and moves right along instead of confronting it, because it's easier for him that way.

This isn't an excuse for him to be a jerk to his companions, but it does make sense why he acts that way, and it's consistent with his character.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-05 02:54 am (UTC)(link)
this exactly.

Four, bless his hearts, is not so good with 'feelings'. When Sarah Jane leaves, the way he can't hardly look at her, kind of hiding behind his hair...he just sucks at emotions. It wasn't particularly nice of him, but Leela had been with him for a while and understood what he was like.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-05 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
What bugs me is how basically her excuse for leaving was that she suddenly wanted to hook up with that one guy she basically just stood next to for most of the serial (I think; it's been a while since I've seen it and it's a LOOOOOOOOONG serial). I know romance was never Classic Who's focus but DAMN, that literally was a last minute hook-up.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-05 02:51 am (UTC)(link)
I haven't gotten this far into the series yet (I'm an idiot watching from the very beginning), but that sounds just like what happened to Susan.

That's depressing.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-05 03:05 am (UTC)(link)
If I remember right there was a lot of behind the scenes drama about Leela's actress leaving. And a lot of pressure on her to stay. The half ass send off is well kinda sign of them pressuring her to stay on the show.

My memory of that serial is unclear at best (it's been a while since I last saw it), but most of it she wasn't around Andred. He was running around after the Doctor most of the time while Leela was elsewhere, so it really was a last-minute hook-up that came out of nowhere.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-05 03:36 am (UTC)(link)
Well, no, but it's very in-character. The Doctor has huge issues when it comes to goodbyes, and Four was even worse with emotions than usual for him. The companion goodbyes in the Classic series were always pretty harsh to watch. Three's uncomfortably young-seeming hurt when Jo decided to get married, and Five running after Tegan and pitifully begging her not to just rush off on him still puts a lump in my throat. And Four not even being able to stand to look at Sarah Jane, and Seven throwing a hissy fit before going all quiet and anxious and "...think of me, Mel?"

Weird as it may sound, given the usual differences between nu! and classic Who, the Doctor in the old series was almost never as classy as Nine/Ten was when Martha left or he thought Rose or Donna were going to leave. He was usually kind of pathetic, like Eleven in The Angels Take Manhattan, albeit not nearly as emotive and definitely not as honest about it.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-05 05:21 pm (UTC)(link)
My headcanon is that Four is so bad because of what happened with Three. Liz Shaw just up and left him, Jo traded him in for a younger model of himself. Then he was forced to regenerate in agony just after getting things together with Sarah Jane. And what happened with Sarah? She made a big fuss about leaving and walking out on him (yes she was just having a bit of a breakdown herself after the Eldrad thing), just when he was recalled to Gallifrey and forbidden to bring her with him so no chance to reconcile before having to having to dump her and run. Now Leela... oh god the feels.

And the secondary companions; Harry and the Brig. Well Harry refused point blank to trust him after the Zygons and threw the offer of even a simple lift in his face. When he called on UNIT after that, the Brig was too busy in Geneva to see him (realistic yes, but this is the Doctor and empathy with human problems, not his strong suit). Oh those two must have stung, especially the Brig.

Loosely related: I'm watching all the Hartnell in order. I am not even gonna be able to deal when it comes time for Susan's departure, am I?

(Anonymous) 2013-03-05 01:35 pm (UTC)(link)
No.

Or the one after her departure, for that matter. It may have been the '60s, but they actually did great continuity there.
