Even if Rickon is there - not only is he younger but rules of succession in medieval politics tended to be more a guiding principle, or even an ideal, than something strictly adhered to. What was more important than the rule of succession was, frankly, the point of the sword. So it's conceivable to me that there could be a situation where Sansa had enough power and influence that making her Queen of the North would seem like a good political play.

I don't know whether or not Sansa will become Queen of the North specifically but I think she's going to prosper one way or the other.

ASoIaF is very clear about male heirs inheriting despite birth order EVERYWHERE except for Dorne, which is why it's such a big deal there. Succession is extremely important, especially after a war like they're having now. I don't think they're gonna handwave it.

Eeeh, things change, especially after huge wars.

I think I'm with first reply here. While it's true that in real Medieval politics things were more about who was where when and who had the bigger army, in Westeros it seems to be very much more common for them to go to greater lengths to secure a male heir.
