Re: Omg! They cured the HIVy!

Wait, wait, let's be clear about what actually happened: they cured one newborn using the exact same therapies they've already been using, but earlier.

Basically, once you weed out all the premature sciencegasming, the truth is that this means it's a possibility that if they start HIV therapy in newborns earlier as a general practice, they'll be able to cure it in some newborns. Anything beyond that is seriously jumping to conclusions.

This, so much.

I'd love to be excited and I'd love a cure for HIV to be found even more, but this just seems like a very slim chance of a cure for a small group of those affected.

Not to mention that even if this turns out to be an actual cure for newborns, there will still be too many HIV-positive newborns who won't have the chance to get the therapy, just the way therapies for reducing the mother-to-child transmission are not available for all that need them. :/

Absolutely. And the way they delivered this particular therapy means that it's essentially impossible to extend it to a cure for adults.

That's not to say it's not still a major breakthrough and a really good thing, especially for that one kid! but we need to like... be realistic about what actually went down.
