I will never understand why Vincent has fans. Wait, I mean, I understand it (angsty vampire type) but c'mon. In the game (the only game, cough, original FFVII) all he does is fucking mope about dramatically, not interact with anyone, and blather angst ridden poetry. Literally. The first couple times I played I didn't notice it, because I mostly ignored him, but when I started talking to him I realized that every single line he says follows the same "my life is horrible" formula, and what's worse, there's no real substance behind it. Vincent is the single companion in FFVII who is not developed - even Yuffie has more development than he does. Vincent has a backstory, yes... sort of. Girl he liked liked Hojo, not him, did experiments, and Vincent condescendingly blamed himself for this adult woman's decisions. That's the only thing that shows some kind of personality to him, and it's not a good kind of personality.

Sorry to rant, but Vincent has got to be the most overrated character in FF history, because there is literally nothing there.

Here are some gems:

"Hearing your stories has added upon me yet another sin. More nightmares will come to me now. More than I previously had."

"I don't care what you are doing, so much as the idiotic way that you are doing it." (To Don Corneo, who has kidnapped and tied up some women and is about to rape them... Vincent doesn't care, lol.)

"There was no way to cancel the experiment. I couldn't stop her. That was my sin. I let the one I loved, the one I respected most, face the worst."

also: I stupidly pre-ordered that game and bought it the day it came out. :-/ that is my sin, allow me to sleep in a box for eternity for it

Vincent is an optional "secret" character, you don't need him or Yuffie to beat the game

...which, based on what came before it, I'm pretty sure refers to DoC, not FFVII.

Because I was the type of fan SE is marketing toward - the one who cries while playing the spinoffs but buys them purely because they say FFVII on them, in meager hopes they'll be reminiscent of the original's charm. it's a destructive relationship.

he's played so straight as an angsty emo vampire-type brooding dark guy that he comes across as a mockery of the archetype

Pretty much this. Vincent's the teammate where every other teammate goes "...wait, seriously? You slept 30 years in a box as 'penance'? Yeah, 'cause that makes sense." Your whole team is a bit off-kilter and has thus far been very sympathetic to each other's tragic backstories, then they all side-eye Vincent for his weirdness. It's hilarious.

Of course this is played so much on that he does really lack much in development (you get a little if you have all his lines, I think--but they're all optional so easy to miss) and relationships, but what is there is fun to play at. Not my favorite in the game by a long shot, but I do think he's a worthwhile character.
