When he was a kid, my father was knocked out of a spelling bee because of this. He's still bitter.

(because of bass and base, not because of Homestuck, just to be clear)

You gotta ask for definition on those words though.

You should go back in time and tell their dad that.

While you're at it, can you go back and tell me that even though it SOUNDED like they were saying 'prow', I should really have asked for the definition to ascertain that the word was not, in fact, 'prowL'? Good to know longstanding spelling-bee bitterness isn't just an individual thing.

My old bandmate and I came up with a mnemonic. It's okAY to play the bAYss, but if you play the bAss, the bAss will get mAd.

Where I'm from they are pronounced the same, both to rhyme with case.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-06 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
th-they aren't the same?

fuck English

(Anonymous) 2013-03-06 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
The instrument is pronounced like "base". The fish is pronounced such that it rhymes with "ass".

(Anonymous) 2013-03-06 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
sa

I always thought both were like the second one

huh, thanks

(Anonymous) 2013-03-06 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
da

Eh, for the longest time, I did, too, until somebody corrected me when I was talking about the bass adjuster on the radio. It's not really a word you come across spoken that much in the right context unless you're into music, but for some reason, you hear about the fish a lot.

ayrt

yeah, I honestly can't remember if I've heard the word bass (as in the instrument) spoken out loud ever

Never took music class in school?

(Anonymous) 2013-03-06 05:46 pm (UTC)(link)

Odd. I honestly can't conceive of a music class where 'bass' wouldn't be covered. It's one of the two common clefs, one of the four main vocal ranges, and any number of instruments (bass guitar, bass drum, and double bass probably being the most common). I suppose an all-female choir, but as a class I'd expect bass to be covered as a theoretical thing, even so.

Goddamit english!

(Anonymous) 2013-03-06 03:00 am (UTC)(link)
Depends on the region and dialect, there is no standard pronunciation guide for English and it is such a regionalized language that it could very well be the same in your area.

YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO PRONOUNCE THEM DIFFERENT???

....I guess I always heard "base guitar" and read "bass guitar" and I guess I assumed they were different things now I feel incredibly stupid.

Awww I like this secret ♥

Still, although I know they are pronounced differently, i do not give a shit. When I play my bass, I call it like the fish. English can go rearrange its face, that does not read like base to me ever.
