and so the jennifer lawrence backlash begins...

(Anonymous) 2013-03-06 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
Actually, I have never liked her acting. Don't find her personality appealing, although she's very physically attractive. She's very plain and forgettable in my opinion.

I think maybe they're trying to start wank.

It began a while ago actually. :/

No, they really don't matter. For any category. I mean, these are the people that chose Seth McFarlane to host the awards show; their judgement is suspect at best.

No. It doesn't matter, and you're a fool if you let it matter. This is especially true for the Oscars, where you should, frankly, be inured to the Oscars making horrible, inexplicable lapses in judgment by this point. But it's true across the board - it only matters to the extent that you decide to give it credence.

Jennifer Lawrence is a great actress (even if Silver Linings Playbook wasn't Oscar-worthy). Suck it.

Bitter much? There are lots of talented actresses and maybe she isn't the most talented ever, but she's definitely talented as well as enjoyable to watch.

I think it is interesting the way that public relations and public perceptions of celebrities has shifted in the Internet era. It's interesting to me the way the Internet absolutely goes bananas for any celebrity whose public persona seems spontaneous, or wacky, or goofy, or particular to them, or unmanaged, or authentic - how much we eat that stuff up and how uncritical we can be about it. And it's not just true with Jennifer Lawrence, although she's the most prominent example - it seems to be true across the media landscape. I do wonder whether Lawrence is exploiting that tendency - how much of her persona is, in fact, a persona - a stage-managed image of authenticity.

But at the same time, whatever you think of her public persona, I think she's a very talented actress.

I wouldn't even say she's the most prominent example. I'm thinking Zooey Deschanel.

I'm laughing at the fact that there are two secrets here that kind of tie into one another.

I, too, have an irrational hatred of girls who get popular

There must be something wrong with her because I'm over here in the corner not being looked at and there's nothing wrong with meeeeeee

I don't know, I go between liking her and not liking her, she says some really stupid shit but she's so far still not as bad as a lot of people in Hollywood, at least from what I have seen.

But I don't get where people think she's talented, AT ALL. She's an okay actress at best, and SLP definitely did not deserve an Oscar. So yeah, maybe I agree with you on the overrated part, she doesn't bother me otherwise though.

N!S- It really doesn't matter. I just think people get angry that the film they like is snubbed. It's the whole, "How dare you like what I don't" or "How dare you not like what I do" thing. I still get irrationally angry that "Pan's Labyrinth" didn't win "Best Foreign Film" the year it was nominated. It doesn't mean anything at all. Guillermo del Toro's career hasn't suffered from it, and the film is still one of those really well liked films that a lot of people have seen. I just get irrationally angry because it's my favorite film, but I am aware that it doesn't mean anything at all so I get over my anger pretty quickly.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-06 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
You know who else never won a (real) Oscar? Peter O'Toole. Citizen Kane. Apocalypse Now. Stanley Kubrick. Raging Bull. You know who has won an Oscar? The Three Six Mafia. Crash.

You're in fine company. The Oscars suck.

"Go straight to her head?" Because you, some random internet person, would know if it did or didn't, and it would in any way affect you? No, I totally get it. Me, I'm worried that Ben Affleck not getting an Oscar nom for his directing will make him buy fewer drinks for his entourage.

...The Oscars matter? This is news to me.

Movie awards haven't really mattered to me ever, and even less so since Stephen Colbert did a prediction of a bunch of them (the year Crash beat Brokeback Mountain I think) using completely random associations and got a shitton of them right. Made me laugh so hard, but they're basically just bragging rights for the film industry really.

if you think the oscars matter, well, good on you for being exactly the kind of person they exist for. somebody has to care about them enough to watch them. i certainly don't.

I am actually more surprised when people care about the Oscars than when they don't care. So yeah, some of the people saying that do mean it.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-06 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
I don't care what goes to her head, but the fact they gave her an oscar is just bull.

that whole ceremony was bull.

Girl gets famous, people love her in and out of Hollywood, and so people HAVE to find anything to hate about her. And because she's a generally likeable, relatable girl, the flaw people come up with? She's faking her own personality! Naturally.
