I'd totally do that, except in this particular case the pairing is one that a lot of people really detest (it's incest). So I feel like I'd alienate a bunch of people -- or worse, get flamed for adding shippy hints without warning about it or something. Ugh, I dunno... I personally love both gen and pairing-stuff of these two characters, so it's difficult to decide. The story could genuinely go either way, too :\

If you feel like you'd have to warn for the shippiness, based on what you're saying, and you don't want to do that, then write it as gen.

Good subtext is such that it only COULD be read as shippy if the reader is so inclined.
