Far Cry 1 is really quite henious

So I got into a fight with Dark Souls (why you gotta hurt me baby) and stormed off to have dalliances with other games for a bit. First rebound: Far Cry, which I've had for a long time, never really liked, and decided it was time to replay it to see if I like it now that I have a PC that can run it on max settings. (It's part of my "does it still suck" campaign where I retry stuff, mostly games, to see if I still hate it.)

My god this game is shit. It's actually worse than I remember. Its few claims to fame were normal mapping before Doom 3 (didn't make the game any less ugly) and fairly open-ended gameplay (hamstrung by a majority of the levels funneling you -- sure, it's a big funnel, but it's still a funnel.)

I don't know what I could possibly say is good about this game. The graphics are bad, the voice acting is bad, the story is bad, the gunplay is bad, the AI is bad, the level design is bad, the enemy design is bad, the loading times are bad -- yes, 9 years on! -- and everything else about this game is just bad.

For a game that was supposed to be next-gen it went a long way towards feeling like one of those endless early-00s FPS games that were effectively dishwater-dull Half-Life knockoffs with the difficulty all out of whack and a appallingly stupid, paper-thin plot.

Fuck this shit. I'm going back to Blighttown.

I never played the first Far Cry, though that's shitty to hear. I started on FC3, which is loads of silly fun (though I hear there really ought to have been dinosaurs, and I can only agree that there would have been nothing wrong with dinosaurs). The plot is as dopey as you'd expect, but hang gliding, and murdering defenseless jungle creatures is awesome.
