Breakfast without milk, bread, eggs, butter or fruit?

(Anonymous) 2013-03-06 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
I keep running out of milk and bread at the same time and I never seem to realise until after the shops shut. I've just done it again, and I don't have eggs or butter either, this time. I'm unlikely to wake up early enough to go to the shop before I have to leave for college (I did to sleep through my alarm anyway!), so I'm a bit at a loss as to what I could eat for breakfast tomorrow, other than dry cereal or peanut butter out of the jar. Does anyone have any suggestions for something I could prepare tonight within an hour or in the morning within twenty minutes?

Posted in the right place, this time!

What DO you have in your pantry?

Carrots, potatoes, mushrooms, onions, garlic, a bit of cheese, one tomato, an end of cucumber, a selection of currently frozen meat, jam, golden syrup, peanut butter, a tin of baked beans, a tin of tomatoes, gravy, cheerios, a selection of seasonings, instant coffee, sugar, flour, and a small handful of fusilli pasta. And ketchup.

Me again. I suppose I could make some pasta. Or do sausage and mushrooms. Or pasta, sausage and mushrooms. Yeah, I suppose I have plenty really.

Hmm his is a tough one. You could make hash browns.

Dice the onion, garlic, and mushrooms (sautee in oil if you've got some, otherwise don't worry about it). Defrost, cook, and crumble/shred some of the meat if you want. Halve the tomato and scoop out the innards, and stuff it with your vegetable mixture. Top with cheese. Bake.

Cut up potato, onion, mushroom and tomato (add canned tomatoes if you want) and cook. There you go. I'd eat that for breakfast anyday.

Or, eat the can of beans. I just eat beans for a meal all time.

You could make two kinds of potatoes for breakfast with that:

boil them tonight and either smosh them down into flat shapes or mash them. Put them in the fridge.

if smoshed just throw them in the oven for 15-20 minutes in the morning and top with the cheese. If mashed, cut and mix in the onions, some cheese and/or whatever else you want, and some crushed up cheerios and whatever seasoning you want, then form into patties and fry on the stovetop to make potato pancakes.

Any olive oil? Because I would say screw "breakfast food" and make myself some pasta with veggie in an olive oil, garlic sauce.

Either you make pasta salad (in which case I'd cut up the onions, tomato, cucumber, garlic and carrots, though you can pretty much use any of the vegetables you want, and season the way you like it), which has the added bonus of you being able to prepare it now and cool it overnight, or you cut up the vegetables and make an omelet without eggs for breakfast.

Depending on what kind of meat you have you can also fry it and add it to either the pasta salad or the omelet (though that might take too long in the morning; also, if you're not used to it, eating and preparing hot, fried meat in the morning might not agree with your stomach).

Candied carrots? Slice the carrots into medallions, roast on 350F with butter and the syrup until they tender to the fork.

Alternately, fry the mushrooms, onions, garlic, and tomato together until they're translucent; season to taste, and put through a blender/food processor/puree with a hand blender; it's not much, but drink it down with a cup of coffee and it should fuel you up enough to get some food.

Butter and flour, if you're willing to do a bit of work, you can make and bake quick savoury shortbreads tonight.

Without knowing what else you have on hand, all I can suggest is

1) Mix cereal with peanut butter and enjoy
2) Eat whatever non-breakfast food you have available

Alternative: Mix cereal with peanut butter and syrup and bake.

I sometimes have pasta and spinach for breakfast. Or you could make up some rice and mix in whatever you have lying about? A bit unusual, but it'll probably keep you going through class.

Alternatively, leave early and use the excuse to treat yourself to a croissant or something on the way in.

If you had flour and yeast, you could make bread. All that really needs is flour, yeast, salt, and water. Then you'd at least have something to put the peanut butter on. Any chance of that?

I do have yeast, actually. Bread wasn't on my list of possibilities because it's kind of late at night here and I need sleep at some point, but I've just found a quick bagel recipe that I have all the ingredients for, so I'll get on with that now and have something ready for me in the morning. Sorted, thanks :)

Excellent! I made bagels for the first time last week; it was fun and they were tasty. I'm glad you figured something out, and that I was helpful! =D

My roommate used to use water in place of milk for her cereal when she ran out. I never tried it myself, but that might be an option if you have cereal. You could fry some meat like ham or steak if you have it. Do you have any oatmeal? If you have it, rice is good and filling and you could make it tonight and heat it up in the morning, maybe sprinkle it with cinnamon.

If you have flour and icecream you could make muffins. You need one cup of each, soften the icecream before mixing in the flour until you make a smooth batter, then fill muffin tins 3/4 full and bake at 425 degrees F/220 degrees C for 12-15 minutes (or until a toothpick/knife comes out clean).

Either do potatoes and sausage, or make this cake!

Hotdogs. Cold.

Just give it up. Food is food. So long as you eat something why does it matter? Why does 'breakfast' have to be limited to traditional breakfast items?

Re: Breakfast without milk, bread, eggs, butter or fruit?

(Anonymous) 2013-03-06 02:20 am (UTC)(link)
I would never eat a cold hot dog, but I have leftovers from the night before for breakfast ALL THE TIME. Because it's quick and easy and usually it's so tasty I don't want to wait for lunch to have some more.

And I have breakfast foods for dinner just as often.

Scones are pretty easy and only take about 20 minutes to bake. This is a good starting recipe with lots of tips that can be adapted for whatever you have on hand - http://www.kingarthurflour.com/recipes/scones-recipe (I usually use heavy cream instead of the half and half or milk and make cream scones) - you can make the dough tonight, put them in the freezer, and bake them up in the morning (of course, you may want to only make a half or quarter recipe).
