Hmm...I wouldn't say ruined, exactly, but when I think of kids being added to casts, the first thing that comes to mind is how a lot of family-centered sitcoms, at least up until the recent past, would add a new kid when the existing children started getting older. Like Cousin Oliver on The Brady Bunch. Or Jesse and Becky's twins on Full House. At this point, it's become a cliche, and it usually fails to bring back the show's earlier charm.

I haven't seen as many non-sitcoms where I felt like the introduction of a did was awkward.

I was a kid when Full House was airing; I don't know how I'd feel about it as an adult. :) At the time, I had the hugest crush on John Stamos. That episode where he does the black and white music video with the twins--if we'd had Youtube back then, I'd have watched it on repeat ad nauseum. LOL
