Can you elaborate?
I don't know much about the universe, but I assume politics play a big part in it?

Either way for once I'd like to have a game protagonist who isn't a) white, b) a brunette, and c) always a little rugged-looking

It takes place in a floating city created to keep people of "inferior" races (e.g. blacks, hispanics, Asians, Eastern Europeans, and Celts) out.

What a missed opportunity.

Ya don't say :/

(Anonymous) 2013-03-08 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
ohhh I see! Then I agree with the OP. They should have made him black.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-08 05:40 am (UTC)(link)
oh man wow

yes a coloured main character would have been way better rather mr generic privlageson

(Anonymous) 2013-03-08 12:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Hold up, since when the fuck do we say 'coloured'?

(Anonymous) 2013-03-08 03:50 pm (UTC)(link)
"We" don't. People who are not native speakers of English sometimes do. "People of color" vs. "colored people" is not such a big distinction when you haven't known about the connotations of the latter your whole life. I tend to give people the benefit of the doubt on this.

There's only one (obviously) rugged white dude protag between nine character options in both of the Borderlands games; one out of 4 characters in Dead Island; the aforementioned Arabic, Italian, etc dudes in AC; and in most Bioware games these days, you can be whatever race you want. So. Some hope for the human race?

(Anonymous) 2013-03-08 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
Some :/

but I want more

It'd require a bit of story retooling though. I don't think there were any black pinkerton's, and that background is used to explain his battle prowess.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-08 03:49 am (UTC)(link)
Didn't they push back the release date just to change Elizabeth's clothing? But I suppose a skin revamp, dialogue changes, and miscellaneous edits would be much too difficult to accommodate. Shame.

No. I don't know where you heard that, but it's wrong.

And... I think it would take a lot more work than that to change the main character. Booker's supposed to be a completely fleshed out character of his own who is also meant to organically interact with Columbia. Not saying games don't need to branch the hell out, just don't make it sound easier than it actually would be if they were to alter the main character halfway through development like it isn't a big deal. For all we know, it would completely change the story. Shit, maybe he's supposed to be generic. There are quotes about no memory and blank slates all around the game, and his name roughly means "the white book." I mean, come on. After Irrational admitted that they picked a shit cover on purpose to attract idiots, I'm willing to give them some credit.

BUT THIS IS ALL A LITTLE STUPID because the game isn't out yet. This criticism is a valid one, but it sort of falls flat because, uh, we don't know Booker or how his story unfolds yet. Once we do, by God, let the arguments commence.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-08 12:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I wasn't sure on my sources either (I heard it through word of mouth from several people).

You hold a good point. I honestly think Booker will be great, but like you said, we can only wait and see.

You say that sarcastically. I don't think you realize how huge those are.

Also, making him black an an ultraracist isolated society would prevent most peaceful interactions. Previous games in the series have allowed for opportunities to not fight, to gain allies. You'd have to change a lot going back now. This is a game where changing the characters race would in fact require more then a new skin and voice.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-09 05:59 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, I actually didn't mean it sarcastically at all! Sorry for the misunderstanding. I do realize that changing the race would be a bid deal, I was just posting my thoughts, I guess.

Well, there are always Japanese video games, where the heroes are pretty much meant to be... Japanese

Usually pretty and blond, too.
