The judgment of the market is not a judgment of quality. I mean, a non-trivial amount of people watching Jersey Shore do so while knowing that it is shitty and unintelligent, and watch it for "hate watching purposes". That's just one example of the general thesis that the question of the intelligence of the American people based on their television watching habits is a way more complicated on than you are acknowledging.
