People at the communities I frequented were praising Cat Valente and Palimpsest up to the skies, so I read it. I found it just insufferably precious, in a self-regarding way--like I could feel the author rubbing her hands over every phrase.

I just couldn't get over how flowery and purple the prose was and never got into the story because it was too distracting. It's not that the writing's bad, it's just not for me.

I actually love Valente's Fairyland books, but I just... could not get into Palimpset. There was so fucking much focus on the pretty words and phrases that it was masturbatory and pretentious. For me, it got in the way of the story rather than supported it.
