With the exception of Chell and Bayonetta, those are all from series that started generations ago in console terms, and all but Chell are from Japanese developers, and are largely male-gaze-tacular :/

Where are the non-white dudes?

I think they're all in Dynasty Warriors!

But really, the only leading-man game characters that are recent and fairly well known from a western developr are probably Conner (AC3) and Lee (Walking Dead). Then if you go back in time a ways there's Dingo from ZOE2 who was...ambiguously brown, I guess? Maybe just very tan.

Otherwise you have to resort to samurai and ninja games. Plenty of Asian leading men there.

That is one of the saddest statements ever written on the internet.

L4D has one black man out of four characters, L4D2 has two black people out of four characters. Every RPG that lets you character select has race choices, usually. Faith from Mirror's Edge is Asian.

Some else mentioned AC (although I hesitate to include Altair, since he bizarrely enough had an American accent amongst all other kinds of accents). I make the same exception for the the Prince from the newest Prince of Persia--oh, yeah, technically he's probably from Persia, but you wouldn't gather that by his appearance, manner of dress, and voice.

There are some non-white protagonists from Dead Island and Borderlands, as someone else mentioned.

Uh...OH, LEE! Lee Everett, from The Walking Dead game. I don't think I've ever cared so much about a protagonist before. There's also some characters in some GTA games. There's Dom from Gears of War...and Cole, I guess.

It's interesting that most of my examples only crop up if you have white choices available.

Nope, sorry. Most of those are supporting characters. You can make an argument for coop choices like L4D, but otherwise there's not a lot of non whites as the title character there.

Nope, sorry. All of the ones I listed were protagonists. Altair and Connor are the protagonist of their game. Desmond is far more the supporting character than either of them. The Prince is the protagonist of his game. Lee Everett is the protagonist of his game. Mordecai, Roland, and Salvador from Borderlands are all non-white and all playable protagonists. Sam B, Xian Mei, and Purna are all non-white playable protagonists from Dead Island.

You have a point on Dom from Gears of War, but he is still playable. But yeah, supporting. CJ, Vic Vance, Luis Lopez, and Huang Lee are all protagonists of their respective games (or expansions). Faith of Mirror's Edge is the protagonist of her game.

So everyone I mentioned with the exception of one game.

Really, what the hell were you thinking? Have you ever played a video game in your life?

(Anonymous) 2013-03-08 08:00 am (UTC)(link)
I'm thinking that in AC Desmond was the protagonist. And white. Why am I thinking this? He went on to be in the next games.

I'm thinking that in Borderlands, there's no protagonist. It's basically coop, and that negates the idea of "a protagonist". I'm thinking you also still have the token brown haired white dude featured front and center in every promo shot.

I'm thinking Dead Island is the exact same deal. You don't get to make arguments for games that don't feature a single titular character, but are in fact meant to be multiplayer experiences. In that case you don't get to make an argument, because it's negating the point of this secret. You aren't making any one character the hero, so having it not be a white guy doesn't really change anything.

And I've played literally hundreds of videogames. With the exception of Lee, there's nothing here really.

Desmond is a protagonist, but his segments tend to last less than a couple of hours. The games are completely dominated by whatever ancestor you are playing as. They are the character on the cover, the character in all of the marketing, the character who has a story and an arc. Desmond is almost entirely a plot device.

It is coop, and there are four protagonists. Video games, more than any other medium, can have multiple protagonists. Same with Dead Island--three of the four are not white. I already said that there's a trend in video games to only allow for non-white protagonists if there are multiple protagonists to be played.

And I've played literally hundreds of videogames

But you've apparently learned nothing about them.

I've forgetten to mention some of the CoD protagonists have been non-white, the protagonist of TimeSlitters and the protagonist from Just Cause.

You know, this is coming across a lot more of a defense of race in gaming than I meant it to. The state of it is abhorrent. What I'm arguing against is your complete misreprentation of my choices and apparent ignorance of some video games and their protagonists.

Whoa whoa whoa hold up. Which CoD protagonists have been non-white? I've played the whole series and I can't think of any who are explicitly non-white. Jackson (CoD4) and Ramirez (MW2) we never get to see from anything but a first-person perspective, and many people assume Ramirez is hispanic, but... he's never stated or shown to be, and many people just assume he is white or depict him as white as a result.

Many of the supporting characters, like Foley, Griggs, Bowman, Farid, Salazar, etc., are non-white, but the protagonist that the player plays has always either been white or not given a race.
