this is probably emotional enough to be a fandom secret, but...

Mine was Accidents of Nature. She'd been one of my disability rights heroes for quite a while and I adored Too Late to Die Young, so when I found out a few years ago that she'd also written a YA novel, I couldn't wait to get my hands on it.

And then when I did it ended up feeling like a huge betrayal. It isn't even that the book was bad- I enjoyed almost all of it, and there are some scenes that were just perfect- but in the midst of this story that's all about young people with disabilities coming together and developing a sense of community and pride, the way my disability was handled was completely different from all the others and it felt really dehumanizing.

It may have just been an attempt to write characters realistically for the setting and time period, but I honestly couldn't tell from the narrative framing whether it was just their opinion or hers, too. And since I only discovered the book after she died, I'll probably never know.
