Stupid question - TWOP

(Anonymous) 2013-03-08 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
Does it count as a "fandom site"? It seems like most of the time the general consensus there seems to be the opposite of that of the fandom at large - usually they'll hate a character or pairing that's massively popular pretty much everywhere else, for example.

I feel like the answer should obviously be yes, but at the same time it seems most of the people there just want to discuss (and bitch about) shows but aren't into the things that I usually think of as "fannish" (such as fic/art/etc).

Like, if a show had no fandom on LJ/Tumblr/Twitter (idk if Twitter even counts, because honestly outside of LJ and Tumblr I'm not really sure what sites are considered "fandom spaces") would you consider the people posting about it there to be "the fandom"? A lot of times it's the only place I can find discussion for some shows, but it's hard to gauge whether or not the people there really represent the opinions of "the fandom" when it's the only place people are even talking about it.

Hopefully this makes some sort of sense...

I think it definitely counts as a fandom site (even though a lot of the time it veers more into hatedome), it's just more meta based than fanworks based.

The question goes to the root of a significant question of what constitutes "fandom" in this day and age, and to what extent ways of understanding media, dealing with media, and interacting with each other have bled over from various fandoms into internet discourse at large.

But yes I'd say it's reasonable to call it fandom.
