Who runs AO3 and why? And how?

(Anonymous) 2013-03-08 04:09 am (UTC)(link)
I just realized I have no idea who owns, runs and pays for AO3. Which kind of boggles my mind. The amount of overhead and the number of employees to keep everything running so smoothly must be staggering. How are there no ads?

The groblins! But be warned-they are quick! You must be determined, for they will only show themselves under shadowed doorways. Do not give up hope! The groblins will be yours one day!

A shadowy cabal, to take over the world, and don't worry about it.

I actually looked this up a few days ago. It's a fan-run site in response to another fail fanfic archive years ago (Fanlib if anyone remembers). Said archive's terms of service gave them the right to edit and distribute whatever you post on their site.

You can read the gist of it here: http://community.livejournal.com/life_wo_fanlib/48350.html

It's a project of the Organization for Transformative Works, but I don't know that much beyond that. I think it's mainly run by volunteers, and I think the OTW uses donations (and possibly membership dues? I think there's a fee to be a member of the OTW, but I'm not sure) to pay for the site.

The thing you most need to know is that it's run by a non profit that was formed specifically so that fan communities could "own the goddamn servers" and never have to worry about being jerked around by non-fannish people trying to censor them and/or profit from them. Hence the name, An Archive of Our Own (pretty sure it's a reference to the famous essay by Virginia Woolf, A Room of One's Own)
Naomi Novik has gotten her fair share of criticism for her leadership decisions on AO3, but I will pretty much adore her forever for making it a reality.
And I don't think they're lacking for infrastructure costs. Last time I checked, they were saying the only thing they really needed was more volunteers with coding/database experience.
