I mean, it's true what you're saying, you can only help someone if they are willing to take your help. But that little nugget of advice seems wildly out of context and bordering on inappropriate/unfortunate implications, given Fantine's story in the movie.

Well, OP was pretty much comparing their friend to Fantine, so when you said "want to be helped" that way, it...carried a really unfortunate implication, which I'm sure you didn't intend but was still incredibly jarring given the context.
