(Anonymous) 2013-03-08 05:07 am (UTC)(link)Have you seen an episode? Rae is very worth identifying with. And I'm saying that as someone who is not overweight -- but body image issues are not exclusive to one subset altho they can be manifested differently and have variable levels of severity (especially in terms of ridicule and bullying). I think it gives a window for other people, but it's not entirely alienating for someone who doesn't have that specific problem.
Also isn't it sort of obvious not to be fucked up? Like the whole thing is Rae is GETTING BETTER. You're right. No one should be like her... coz it's painful. You should get help. Which is basically what Rae is doing. Sorting out her life, trying to live it as best she can, and recovering. It's not a case of "look at this fat mentalcase, let's all point and laugh coz we're so unlike her". None of that has any connotation about low "worth", as a character or a person.
It's completely the opposite and it's sort of HOPEFUL. I guess I just don't see how having a fucked-up character with very real issues and watching her attempt to overcome them is not "someone worth identifying with".
