OK, look. I love musicals. I love Les Mis. However, I thought it was a goddamn weak adaptation of Les Mis.

This. Most people like musicals because the music/singing is good. That's why people in musicals spend so much time training their singing voices. If you don't get actors with well-trained singing voices, the musical fails as a musical. Honestly, if they had just made a movie based on the book, rather than the musical, it might've been better, but fewer people would've seen it.

Also, since when are musicals "niche"? Most people like them, you are not a special snowflake.
