Well, I learned something new today.

This secret made me smile.

Well done, OP. Good secret.

I have a hard time caring for either of them, because of Argos.

Well, there's several versions where Penelope is sleeping with one or two of them - she just doesn't want to marry them. Don't forget, she's mistress of her house as a single woman. And yes, Odysseus does seem to be faithful to his wife whenever he has a reasonable choice in the matter.

LOL I actually wrote a paper on this exact thing when I was at uni.

Nice to see the classics have a fandom too :)

*cough*

Well...Circe actually released his men because she was of how UBER SEXY Odysseus was (at resisting her magic). And then he stayed there of his own free will for year and ate and fucked until his men were kind of like "Hey...about that home we were supposed to be going back to..."

But you're right on Calypso. That was rape in that case.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-09 04:21 am (UTC)(link)
Wasn't the bit with Circe part of the deal to get his men set free?

[personal profile] sugar_spun 2013-03-09 04:31 am (UTC)(link)
No, I just checked, he overpowers her and forces her to change them back. I believe he also thinks at some point that Penelope cannot compare to either her or Calypso.

The entire thing's been rendered permanently absurd to me anyway because of that time he fell in love with Xena.

I remember I spent the first two seasons of Xena trying to establish the time period it was trying to go for before I was just like "fuck it."

(Anonymous) 2013-03-09 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
best mindset for the Xena Historical Timeline.

I prefer the theory that he's working through some massive PTSD issues before he can go home and be a peace-time ruler and family man again.

But this is certainly provocative.

On the other hand... Odysseus lies. Pretty much constantly. And the Odyssey presents most of his adventures from his point of view, as the story he tells the Phaeacians. Soo... his version of why he had to sleep with every woman he encountered on his voyage home may not be entirely trustworthy...

(Anonymous) 2013-03-09 06:50 am (UTC)(link)
But then again, Odysseus would try to present himself in the /least/ emasculating (as per the mores/biases of the time) manner possible, both due to his own pride and due to the fact that, in relating the story, he's trying to impress the Phaeacians. So, in fact, the very fact that he alludes to any dubconnish (as someone else called it downthread) elements at all is pretty telling.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-09 07:39 am (UTC)(link)
I agree. Odysseus is one of the earliest examples of an unreliable narrator.

As strongly as I come down on the pro-Trojan side of the issue username what username?, I do have to recognize that Odysseus really didn't want to go to Troy in the first place, and tried really hard to get out of it, despite the oath he'd taken that kind of boxed him in.

But you make a good point about Circe and Calypso. There's definitely a dubconnish element to those encounters.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-09 04:54 am (UTC)(link)
I do agree that (as someone said), those encounters are dubconnish, but that's according to Odysseus. Then again, I doubt he'd spend 20 years trying to get back to someone he didn't love.

And for all the sexual double standards in The Odyssey, many people forget that Odysseus and Penelope are portrayed as intellectual equals and once they're reunited, they seem to have at least somewhat equal footing in the actual marriage.

Read Margaret Atwood's novel, Penelopiad. It puts an interesting and humorous twist on the Odyssey, told through the eyes of Penelope.

Huh, I had those same issues with Odysseus too. But yeah, there really were some dubcon stuff in there when he had those encounters.

Still though, I think The Aeneid is a much better story, with a much better protagonist~

I recently (as in, in the last few years) a mild dislike of Ancient Greek double standards when I found out at least one version of why Medusa is a monster is pretty much victim blaming.

I think it can be reasonably interpreted that in Greek Myth, if you have power, you're always right. Unless you're Hera, but even then, most of the time she was victim blaming too*, so it still applies.

I'm all for her not taking it out on the other partners, but I wouldn't fancy standing up to Zeus myself either. That would have been hairy. D:

Odysseus is a slut and he was asking for it.
