Wait, do you mean turned-into-the-opposite-sex or born-the-opposite-sex? In the case of situation #2, I'm totally with you, that's ridiculous. But if the character was temporarily turned into the opposite sex, then I agree with it, although I find it a little confusing. We have someone that is very definitely, internally, one sex in their head, and a different one physically. Assumedly, the characters would relate to the sex-swapped character the same way they used to - why is using the gender-specific (as opposed to physical-sex-specific) pronoun strange when said character is likely to change back to their original sex?

I think they just read one specific story and subconsciously adopted it as headcanon. It's a minor character so there probably aren't a lot of fics about them, or at least not a lot of genderbend fics, so when they see the canon pronoun it throws them off for a second.

I'm not sure I understand your comment - are you saying that they've moved their headcanon to the genderbent character in canon, or that they didn't understand the story? Did I misunderstand the secret? (That's entirely possible...)

I dunno, I happen to read genderswap of all kinds in almost all of my fandoms, so I guess I'm relatively used to the terminology. Bodyswap between two different genders of characters, though? That still confuses the hell out of me.

The way I read the secret, they just confused the fanfic with canon. So, hypothetically if the character is a boy in canon, OP keeps thinking he's a girl and gets confused for a second when people refer to him as a boy in other fics. Sometimes it's easy to forget where you read something and confuse canon with fanfic.

I could be misreading it, though.

Re-read it, and I totally think you're right. My comment made no sense. Whoops!

Heh. It's okay.

OP

The character is male in canon and portrayed as always-a-female in the fanfic. I seem to have accepted the character being female as my headcanon and am now surprised at seeing the male pronoun in canon/other fanfic.

Sorry for expressing things a bit unclearly in the secret for the sake of generalising...

AYRT - I think I misread it. Disregard my comment, I am fail!

Zabuza/Haku, OP?

Because there's A TON of fem!Haku fic out there, one in particular comes to mind about him(her) just pretending to be a boy so he(she) can be more useful. It's become my head canon too since this character is very effeminate so I always get a little thrown when I see Haku referred to as a male O.O

This was my thought when I read it (though I don't see how the pic would tie in, so I'm not sure)... I actually get this with him, too - if I read a fem!Haku fic for long enough, I'll end up being surprised when I see male pronouns in the next fic, and vice versa. He's pretty much the only character in any of my fandoms whom I don't mind being genderswapped without any kind of warning.

It's funny, though, because my actual headcanon is the opposite for Haku. Because of all the genderswapping in fic, somehow I've come to see him as transgender, biologically female but identifying as male. It's required that he pretends to be a girl sometimes due to disguises (civilian women would be seen as the weakest, more likely to be taken less seriously by any enemies, given sympathy, etc) - but he doesn't like it. Hence why he says "I'm a boy" to Naruto at the end of their friendly chat: he hates being read as female.

Yours is a really interesting headcanon, though, and I could totally buy into it as an alternative. :) Do you have a link to that fic? I think I'd like to read it!

NTAYRT, but this popped into my head when I read the description of their headcanon: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/5491961/1/Needless-Gender-Confusion

I'm not sure it's what the OP was talking about, though...

I would also like to make mention of a fandom-specific case of born-the-opposite-sex, namely Dwarves in Hobbit/LotR.

Dwarven females are rare - only a third of all Dwarves are female.

There's a line in TTT about males and females looking so much alike that the other races can't tell them apart, thus assuming there are no females dwarves - a line pulled from somewhere in supplementary LotR materials, which also has somewhere a line that states that if a female dwarf has to travel, she'll dress as a male while doing so.

Based on that, there's a whole trope that has developed about dwarves that are canonically male turning out as female... but that isn't revealed until well into the quest, since they're masquerading as male for safety reasons.

Pronoun issues? As long as it is made clear that whoever's POV the scene is from (Bilbo) is having problems thinking of these dwarf-women as female because they're used to thinking of them as male... That works fine.
