Why is/was Buffy so popular in fandom?

(Anonymous) 2013-03-09 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
This isn't a rhetorical question. I'm definitely not saying "ugh, Buffy is horrible why on earth is it popular?" (I don't even watch it regularly -- I'm just planning to get seriously into it now). I'm just really interested in knowing what you guys think the reasons are for why it is popular.

It's by Joss Whedon. It has quippy, clever, pop-culture savvy dialogue and likable characters who are mostly nerdy and who nerds can relate to. It has vampires and magic. It has several girls who kick ass. It has serious, almost melodramatic plotlines as well that people can mostly relate to. Also, it is insanely on-point in terms of how well it deals with coming of age and teenage / young adult kinds of issues, which younger nerds can really relate to (I'm thinking especially here of the second season here). And, again, the whole thing has that layer of clever, funny Joss Whedon dialogue and characterization on top of it.

It does a lot of things that nerds and fandom really, really like. Ergo, nerds and fandom really really like it. No real mystery.

It's by Joss Whedon. He could fart on a napkin and people would call it genius.

That doesn't explain it. He wasn't popular before Buffy. Buffy is what gave him that whole ~untouchable~ reputation in the first place. Before that, no one gave a crap about him.

Some of us still don't.

...I didn't say you did. I just meant that your explanation makes no sense because he was a nobody before Buffy.

When Buffy first aired it was the first of it's kind and completely different than anything else. It's like the mother of modern geeky pop culture nerdtopia. Or something.

Except for that whole X-Files thing before it. Or any of the dozen or so shows throughout the 90s that combined youth and the supernatural, if X-Files doesn't count because they were adults.

I don't really see how you can compare X-Files and Buffy. Not the same nerdtopia at all. And I didn't mean it was the first of it's kind just because it was supernatural teen themed. The whole dynamic, writing, everything was unique at the time.

X-Files had the same kind of mass popularity, back in the day.

And actually has nearly the same type of fervor and following still and is pretty popular in fandom. Two very different shows awesome for different reasons.

A lot of people don't know the stuff that came before it because they were too young. So Buffy is the first nerdy thing that they remember getting into.

AYRT - this makes a lot more sense to me than what AIRT said. I'm not everyone though, so I can kinda see what they meant, too. Just doesn't jibe with what I've witnessed, is all.

Okay but x-files and Buffy are precisely nothing a like, I watched X-files when I was young, and I'd still say Buffy is more important to my youth then x-files was.

Just because the subject matter had been done before it does not mean that it wasn't done in a new way. Everything has been done before, and love it or hate it- Buffy was original enough to make an impact.

It's full of really great quotable moments/lines and memorable emotional scenes (funny, heartbreaking, heartwarming, etc). I have a lot of problems with Whedon, but one thing that man can do is write a good scene/line. Not a good overall plot, but damn can he do a fine scene or one liner. And Buffy is full of that shit.

Even I can kind of enjoy Buffy (at least the first couple seasons) and I can't fucking stand Joss Whedon

For me personally it was the first time I came across characters and stories that I really wanted to see. YES I had seen supernatural stories, and YES I had seen stories about teens, but Joss did Buffy in a way that made the characters more real to me then any show I had seen before.

I was young and Buffy just hit at the right time, it was a time when I was tired of seeing female damsels in distress, I was tired of heroes who constantly survived to the point of ridiculousness, and I was getting tired of characters who I didn't really give a damn about.

And while it's cheesy and has it's bad parts, I'd still consider Buffy something that can really speak to young girls, it's actually amazing how a show about vampires felt more relatable to me then most of what was on television at the time.

It's fun and silly and it was *very* different when it first came out. The people are mostly pretty, the stories are interesting/scary/emotional in a way that's enjoyable rather than eye-rolly.

Oh and, watch the movie, too, it's fun as hell.

Well, for me it's funny and entertaining. I'm only onto season 3 though /overly excited anon who posted once

i didn't expect to enjoy it, don't know why it's popular and don't know much about the josh whedon guy. i'd go with, it's oddly funny and appealing? like, all the girl characters are cool and there's surprising depth happening with recurring characters and its surprisingly sad sometimes

also watching the repo man be so kind and helpful has me in hysterics (giles)

Anthony Head is not the repo man. Harry Dean Stanton is the repo man. Once and forever.
