Yeah, what happens to Theon is awful.

But still... it's one dude. And when it comes to, say, the armies of the Dorthraki pillaging and raping he never misses an opportunity to tell us about it, and sure you can make an argument that it's realistic and likely, while.... at the Wall, as one secret pointed out, the place where there's most likely and most realistically would be male rape, there's... nothing. Nada. Not a peep or even a hint.

What happens to Theon is awful, but it doesn't change the way the overall presentation is skewed. (And why does everyone magically forget that Jeyne Poole is going through the same torture/rape/dog rape at the same time and focus entirely on Theon? That ain't right.)

It's because you're acting like both characters were given the same treatment and fandom only fixated on the male character because of sexism. Which is bullshit. Theon's treatment was far more horrific and prolonged.

No, acting like one instance of male sexual abuse and torture makes the copious amounts of female sexual abuse and torture in the books perfectly equal and fine and okay and unproblematic is bullshit.

To you? You personally think mutilation trumps rape, bestiality, and flaying? Okay, but not everyone would agree, and stating like it's some objective fact reveals enormous bias and weakens your argument.

nayrt, but Theon was flayed too jsyk. They mentioned he even tried to bite his finger off due to the pain before he begged Ramsay to cut it off. And if he had been female, there'd be no question that him being forced to go down on Jeyne post-genital mutilation would be considered rape or at the very least sexual violence.

Your first point is entirely correct, though. A couple instances of sexually based violence against male characters does not make up for the constant sexual abuse female characters go through in the series. But y'know, men getting raped isn't fap material for the neckbeards so it rarely exists in the ASOIAF universe /sarcasm

Theon is a POV character whom we've read a lot of chapters about since the first book. Jeyne Poole is a small side character who was just Sansa's friend with not much of a personality in book 1, then disappeared for three books, and then reappeared only to get tortured by Ramsay. We're just a lot less emotionally invested in her character than we are in Theon's, because we've spent more time reading about Theon. If Jeyne was a big main character and Theon just some guy who had a couple of scenes in the first book, we'd be focusing on Jeyne. Nothing to do with gender.

In a tit-for-tat conversation about the representation of sexual assault in GRRM's books based on gender? I doubt that.

No, he'd still be presented as the reason GRRM's portrayal isn't skewed so the way he portrays the sexual assault of women is totes fine, even if people might manage to remember Jeyne a little bit more if she was POV. And that has everything to do with gender.

My take on it is that these are points of view. Theon has always been a selfish little shit. Why should him getting tortured make him want to give that much of a shit about anybody else?
