I'm not saying Merida necessarily earned it - I'm mostly saying that she and her mother learned to understand each other better. It did seem to me like Merida was about to agree to go with her parents' marriage plan when she was trying to stop the clans fighting in the great hall, but we'll never really know for sure. I really think the point of Merida's arc was that she learned her mother was NOT out to get her, or evil, or whatever else your average teenage girl thinks about her mother when they have contrasting worldviews. They found a happy medium between their worldviews - both were able to be happy with the outcome. I count that as a win, even if it wasn't a compromise in the strictest sense.

Sorry, I've just seen SO MANY secrets bashing Brave, and I ADORED the movie. It frustrates me when people don't get it. :-/

This secret doesn't seem to get it, I can see that. But I disagree with the notion it was a compromise. Merida was the one who, in the context of a Disney movie, was in the right. She just went about it all the wrong ways. You know, doing the wrong thing for the right reasons. But she messes up so badly on that part I just can't sympathize with her.

Yeah, I get that she's not a sympathetic character to many. Hell, I empathized with Elinor more than anyone. But this is the first "princess movie" I've seen where they've actually put forth a genuine, conflicting worldviews relationship between mother and daughter. Both eventually saw the value of the other's opinion, even if the compromise wasn't equal.

I hated Merida from the moment her mom ate the dessert and was obviously VERY sick, possibly dying, and that ginger bitch only cared about "Soooo, have you changed your mind about that marriage thing yet?" I mean shit, even Elinor was like "Girl, I'm dying, what's WRONG with you?!"

I agree. I don't get why so suddenly people are bashing Brave when before people used to love it. I do get why everyone love Wreck-it-Ralph, but I prefer Brave over WiR.

+1

I liked both (with a little more love for Wreck-It Ralph). My mom and I were both crying in the theater for Brave and we've been in a much better relationship since. I'll always give it that much.

AYRT After to watch the movie I realized I was closer to my dad instead my mom and made me feel bad about it. Then I started to get a better relationship with her. I'll show her the movie for sure (I went with a friend to a Cinema).

So glad to hear it! My mother and I ended up having a long conversation once my dad and brother went to do their own stuff (we all saw it together), and now I feel like we've definitely moved beyond where we were.

Same.

I think "Brave" ended up suffering from Expectation Overload: first, everybody was going on and on and on about the female protagonist, the mother-daughter relationship, and how awesome and epic and groundbreaking it was going to be. Each and every viewer had Great Expectations about this movie.
Then they actually saw the movie and it wasn't like they had imagined it: not epic enough, not awesome enough, not groundbreaking enough, and so on and so forth.

But there's no way one single movie could have ever lived up to all those ideas and all that hype. I honestly don't know how they ended up with all these expectations from a 30-seconds preview.
