(Anonymous) 2013-03-09 05:15 am (UTC)(link)A few months back, I activated my OK Cupid profile again after a breakup from a pretty long relationship. I told myself (and said on my userpage) I was just looking for new friends - not sex, no romance.
This guy sent me a message, and I decided to reply. He seemed nice, and we exchanged a few messages. I found myself somewhat attracted to him - which seemed odd, considering I didn't really know him at all - and started thinking meeting up with him might be nice.
Then Life Happened in a pretty massive way - it seemed like I'd have to look for new housing AND a new job suddenly, I was still grieving after the breakup and possibly depressed, a couple of other things - and I just never got around to replying to him. I felt really bad about it, but I figured it might be for the best anyway. It really seemed kind of weird that I felt so attracted to him - and somewhat suspicious, since (1) he kinda reminds me of my ex in a good way, and (2) he hits quite a few of my IRL kinks. Holy fetishization, Batman!
But I never quite stopped thinking about him. And it turned out we had acquaintances in common. Maybe we could be pretty good friends, after all? But I still put off writing to him, because I felt ashamed I hadn't written sooner. What if he didn't want to hear from me?
Anyway, a week ago or so I was finally able to make myself try to write to him again. Except, turns out his user account no longer exists.
The only things I knew about him were the info on his page, including an apparently-very-generic username, possibly based on a probably-very-common (in Japan) first name that might or might not belong to him, and in which research department he worked at the university in my town. Feeling like a very creepy person, I checked the personnel page of the research department in question. Nope, his name wasn't there any more (I had checked once before, just to see if the person he claimed to be existed. Well ... mostly that). Meaning he's probably left the country. Most likely I'll never find out what happened, or what kind of person he would have turned out to be if we'd got to know each other.
God, I regret not writing back.
