Heck, you don't even have to go through Poe for the ape (well,monkey...) connection. One of Holmes' stories, "The Creeping Man" (which isn't the same as "The Crooked Man"), has an old guy shooting himself up with a serum derived from... some part of a species of monkey (they never really specify what part) to try to regain his youth.
