But the 'oh I'm sorry' is one of the most vitally important parts! Merida spends the ENTIRE MOVIE saying, "Okay, this is what happened BUT IT'S NOT MY FAULT". She was deflecting blame everywhere and refusing to take responsibility. By the end of it, she had grown up enough to realise that she DID have to take responsibility for her actions.

Yes, it worked out well for her. Yes, Elinor suffered a lot. But Merida has a lot of character growth growing from a teenage girl who thinks she knows what's best and damn the consequences, to a young woman who's actually taken responsibility for her actions and admitted when she's wrong.

Both she and Elinor saw errors in how they treated each other, it's not a competition on who gave up more. The point is that they both compromised.
