I think that's exactly why they criticize it.

I'll admit, I liked Wreck-it-Ralph better. It was just a fun movie. But Brave was a much more emotional movie for me.

Also, this is probably uncharitable of me, but I can't help but wonder how Brave would have been accepted if had been a (yet another) father/son story instead of a mother/daughter story.

Okay, I know that this is SO NOT THE POINT, but I'd actually be intensely interested to see a movie where a father and son resolve their issues by coming to the same compromises and emotional understanding that Merida and Elinor eventually strike. Like, it would be fascinating to me to see a kids movie show that fathers and sons can resolve their issues through communication. O___o

I mean, the closest I can think of is Finding Nemo, but even then, the father and son don't really ever communicate. They both reach their emotional catharsis independent of one another (both Nemo and Marlin's character growth comes from talking to and interacting with other people, not their father/son) and so it's not really the same at all to the understand that Merida and Elinor reach. A movie where two guys actually talk about their problems, yes, sign me up.

Haaa, good point, but what I mean is, there's more to criticize in the movie than just the message, yet 90% of the actual crit I see people give is "I didn't like it because [missing the point]." This thread has a better ratio than most though.

Same here! I thought Wreck-it Ralph was better put together, but Brave hit really close for me and got the real waterworks. I adored and cried during both though.
