What's the romanized title?

(Anonymous) 2013-03-11 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
It's Jojo's Bizarre Adventure.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-11 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I felt the same way for a while but then I actually did it and it was amaaazing. I know +100 volumes is A LOT but it really is worth it. (Especially since it would take YEARS for the anime to catch up, if they even continue to adapt it)

(also I don't know if this would be better to stomach, but thinking of it as reading five 15-24 volume series that are connected might help?? since all the parts are pretty different.)

It's still an investment of several thousand dollars and a huge amount of time.

Time? Sure. Dollars? PERHAPS NOT.

Yeah, good luck trying to find any officially translated manga in English ;) You might still be lucky with Part 3, but other than that, you'll have more luck finding them in French and Italian.
Also, "huge amount of time"... I started the manga two months ago and I've already read 3 1/2 parts. I read "Steel Ball Run", which has 24 volumes, in about a week. It's possible once you're hooked.

Same here! I feel like anon SHOULD do it, they are missing out! ;v; Especially SBR is just so beautifully drawn and the story is amazing omg <3

It's easier to tackle if you just view it as 8 separate series. Yeah, you probably want to read them in order (or just skip to part 3 after the anime since it's a faithful adaptation), but you can always take breaks between parts if it feels too long.

+ obligatory ~~~~I LOVE JOJO'S comment, because I really do!

You are seriously, seriously missing out if you don't read the manga.

(Though, in a way, you'll miss out even if you do read the manga now... I'm thinking of the hilarious Japanese-to-Chinese-to-English scanlation of the fourth part that was the only thing available back in the day. Still makes me laugh, just thinking about it!)

Some of Duwang remains untranslated, and the new translation preserved the choicest bits. You, too, can get a feeling so complicated! :P
cloud_riven: Cute cigarrette box and coffee cup, with smiley faces, holding hands! Adorable! (bff)

Can't blame you for that haha

The manga is so good though, and I second the above anons in reading it as if it was a group of series or arcs or whatever.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-12 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
I get you, OP. There's only so much time in the day. There's too much catch-up and too much real life work to warrant tackling it. There's other fun things you want to give your time to. It's easier to digest entertainment in one format than another at the time. There are plenty of reasons not to follow up on something in every format it might exist in.

There's no need to read everything - as other people have mentioned, the different arcs are fairly self-contained. Even by manga standards, Jojo is full of lol wtf, definitely worth it.

(Did anyone else start Jojo for CLAMP-related reasons?)

(Anonymous) 2013-03-12 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
Oh shit, don't tell me that you are talking about the EGG? (Still traumatized about that)

I remember reading a bit about Jojo in Animerica, back when it was still a thing. Oh, nostalgia.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-12 05:19 am (UTC)(link)
The part that's being animated isn't 100+ volumes though.

Anon, you are missing out. I was thinking the same thing when I started JoJo. I just saw the sheer size of this series and was super intimidated. But once you start, it's pretty easy. You pretty much wheeze through Part 1 and Part 2.

I did start with Part 7 though, which is an AU, so I could recommend that to you. It "only" has 24 volumes, but it's amazing and will get you hooked. Also, it'll cut down the size of manga still left to read ;)

idk, just slowly try and get into it. It's not like you have to read all 100+ manga in one sitting. Split them up. Eventually you will get through.

I get it! It's huge, and intimidating, and yes - bizarre. (Ba-dum psssh!) But as others have said, the parts are pretty disconnected from each other, so digest it one bit at a time and take it slowly. (And 7 and the currently-running 8 are AU compared to 1-6, and 5 doesn't really refer to many characters from other parts though it does expand on concepts from 3 and 4).

But I'm not going to pressure you into reading it - I can't decide how you spend your time. Do keep in mind that if you participate in the fandom in any way you WILL be spoiled (and sometimes quite horribly so) about later parts whether or you like it or not unless you are very, VERY careful about sticking entirely to events relevant to Phantom Blood and Battle Tendency, and that this will only get worse when the new fighting game All Stars Battle comes out. If you're okay with not reading the canon but knowing all the spoilers so you can participate in fandom, I personally think that's okay too.

Also keep in mind that everything changes from part 3 onwards in a BIG way in terms of Araki's artistic style and plot focus. It may just be that the rest of JJBA isn't quite your thing (though I encourage you to give it a chance anyway). It also may just be that you end up devouring it all eventually while still holding onto Battle Tendency as your favorite. ...oh wait, that's just me.

Regardless, whenever you're ready, get spoiled and/or get reading! This fandom is wonderful as I've seen it so far. (Disclaimer: I'm a participant on the spoiler-heavy JJBA Twitter RP, and I love every damn second of it, and I DON'T recommend following it until you're familiar with major characters from all eight parts.)

(Anonymous) 2013-03-12 04:50 pm (UTC)(link)
but parts 1/2 (the ones featured in the new anime) are just 12 volumes in total, and they're not going to animate 3-8 anytime soon
