Baseball is actually extremely popular and healthy in the US, it's just that football is RIDICULOUSLY popular. Baseball doesn't do as well on the top end as football or basketball - IE, in terms of the number of people watching the playoffs - and it doesn't have as much prominence in the media, maybe. But baseball does pretty well for regular season TV (despite many games being on regional sports TV networks) and it does extremely well in terms of live attendance and ticket sales. And if you look at the kind of money that networks are paying for MLB games, it's hard to say that baseball isn't doing well.

It is true that Americans don't really care as much about the WBC. And Japanese fans tend to be better organized than American fans and do more chants and stuff, which is really cool. And it's great that baseball is becoming so popular worldwide. But I don't think baseball is unpopular in America - it's still really popular. It's not football, but it's not hockey either (no offense hockey fans).
