Re: Soda Alternatives

DA-any non-100% juice is probably going to have added sugar, but even juice without added sugar is still pretty sugary, because most fruit is full of sugar to start with. And fruit juice doesn't have any of the fiber a whole piece of fruit would have, so an apple will make you feel fuller than apple juice will. Also, I tend to drink a lot of flavored sparkling water, the stuff without sugar or artificial sweeteners. It's not ideal, because carbonation isn't good for your teeth, but it's better than sugary soda. Plus you could mix it with fruit juice yourself when you just have to have soda--at least it'll have some nutrients in it aside from sugar.

ayrt

Sounds like you're talking to OP; I'm the anon who mentioned juice.

Thanks for the information though and that sounds like pretty sound advice for OP.

While ayrt makes valid point about whole fruit being better than fruit juice and fruit juice having lots of sugar naturally, even if it is a no-sugar-added -- it's also important to note that the sugar from fruit is very different than table sugar. It's lower on the glycemic index, which means it's broken down in your body more slowly and doesn't have the wild highs and crashes that table sugar has.

And I know about anyone else, but I see a ton of orange juices in the aisle where the only ingredient is oranges.

aryt

Ah, that makes sense. Thanks for the info!

Yeah, that's generally the case with orange, grape, and apple juices (and the only brand of pomegranate juice that I've seen). However, other juices and drinks with multiple juices advertised on them are a lot more likely to be less than 100%. Cranberry juice, in particular, is prone; probably due its natural bitterness.
