Re: Help losing some weight?

I'm a bit shocked that this has been nothing but diet advice. Losing weight on its own is all right, but getting to a point where your body is healthy is what you really want to be doing. Having ten extra lbs on you and being able to run a five minute mile is healthier than just being thin.

That said, there is a right way to incorporate physical activity for weight loss and a wrong way. Always excerise in the morning for maximal fat loss. Your body will be in fasting mode from sleep, and therefore you will be burning calories directly from fatty acid stores during any activity you do before breakfast. Taking advantage of that is a very good way to burn fat.

You should also start a lifting schedule. Having even a bit more muscle mass is so incredibly beneficial to overall health... It encourages mutase activity which has anti-aging benefits, it gives you a larger mass for insulin activity which stabilizes blood glucose levels, it raises resting metabolic rate and makes you more able to lose fat in general...

Diet is great, but exercise is definitely something you want to do.

I agree with all this, but I also think it's a little intimidating to be talking about 5-minute miles, especially when the poster said they're pretty sedentary atm. And intimidation can be a major roadblock to motivation.

Besides, being overweight and being able to walk/run a 10-15 minute mile is still much more healthy just being thin but having no strength or no ability for cardio.

Don't get me wrong, I didn't mean that this is something that's average. I more meant that that level of fitness should be a long term goal rather than just "weight loss".

Myself, I have had all sorts of medical problems. I know what it feels like to be at a point of general health where even walking isn't doable. I'm also pretty sedentary too, because of school, but lately I've been able to sustain a quick jog for 2-3 minutes. This is a record I haven't been able to touch since highschool.

tl;dr Exercise is great for you and you should do as much as you are able, regardless of what that ability actually is.
