Or they just don't want to give money to Something Awful.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-12 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Has SA done something that I'm not aware of that would make them unworthy of giving them money in the last couple years? And, if they have, isn't it equally problematic to sponge off them?

manifold: Rex quondam, rexque futurus. (point? we had a point?)

Not SA as a site as such, but when goons are assholes, there's nothing really to stop them. You're basically paying to participate on a forum that protects its paying members as much as anon memes protect anyone (which is to say, nada).

I used to know this goon who went from Joe Anybody to getting doxxed and people calling up his workplace because he mentioned he was trans. He had literally done nothing else. Moderation doesn't seem to exist for preventing harassment, it's just there for... fuck, I don't even know what SA mods are for if transphobic harassment is NBD.

Anyway. That's why I'd never pay for an account. The awesome stuff is awesome, but if I have to deal with douchebags, I'll do it for free, thanks.

When did this happen? because the forums have gotten immensely better in regards to most of that stuff, but especially trans issues, over the last couple years

Well, that specific series of asshattery was in 2008 (I still know the guy, but we're not close). If SA's had a major crackdown on that stuff in the past four years, enough that that Does Not Happen Anymore—well, my main reason against the tenbux is pretty much gone. Considering the hosting fees for a huge forum, they make sense. So if it IS improved and you totally can't do without the content, sure, why not, pay away.

...however, I tend to be skeptical that problems that endemic can just be Fixed Quickly. So I, uh, am not rushing out to pay it myself. YMMV, especially if you're less cynical about the Internet.

I'm not saying it's perfect, but it's MUCH better than it was in 2008. The process by which it changed actually started around 2008 but it took a couple years for it to fully take effect. It's a combination of the forums getting much more liberal due to a number of things, and the mods cracking down on stuff.

Helldump doesn't exist anymore and Helldumping people is very much frowned upon now. You still have problems sometimes with people being dumb but you also have a lot of really cool people, along with very good, long-running megathreads for trans discussion among other things ( http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3447636 ) which have managed to survive. And you have mods who are very much able and willing to ban or probate people for saying bigoted things or for starting wank. There's still problems but it's definitely much better than it was in 2008 and the problems are not nearly as endemic.

The thing is that you had a lot of people who wanted things to change, and you also had the SA mods who are both mostly good at modding (especially since 2009 or so) and very, very active. So the fact that they were willing to just straight-up ban people for doing dumb shit helped things change a lot. A lot of the kind of people who posted in Helldump and did stuff like what happened to your friend got perma-banned.

If SA's had a major crackdown on that stuff in the past four years,

yes :D

That's their prerogative, but it's also SomethingAwful's prerogative to say, "Then you don't get our original content."

(Anonymous) 2013-03-13 08:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Except it's not exactly 'their' original content, is it? I mean, it's not like Orenronren is getting a paycheck from the site for doing his LP and translation, and Spike, the company that actually made the game, sure isn't. The people who'd be getting the money at most provide hosting for it -- and if Something Awful didn't exist, or shut down tomorrow, there's numerous other forums out there that could be used for that purpose.

Don't get me wrong, there's a lot to be said for the forums -- many good discussions to be found there. But there's also parts of the board culture that I have significant problems with, and when I'm being asked to pay for the privilege of reading or posting to an Internet message board -- and then pay again if I don't want a 'stupid newbie' avatar, and pay again if I want basic functionality like private messages, and pay again if someone takes a dislike to me and I have to get rid of an insulting avatar/title they bought for me, and pay all over again if the mods get irked at something or nothing and 'ban' me... Well, I just lose interest and go to one of the numerous free message boards that don't want to milk me repeatedly. Temporarily losing access to things like the Dangan Ronpa LP is annoying, but I can cope.

Unless you think a translation isn't original content, yes, it is. Oren has expressed a preference that his work remain on that site even if that means people have to pay a fee for it.

As I said: if you don't want to pay for the forums, that's your prerogative. But you (general) have zero right to whine about losing access in that case.

"...and pay again if someone takes a dislike to me and I have to get rid of an insulting avatar/title they bought for me..."

Okay that is a very silly thing to worry about. Consider that unless you're active, involved, and a regular, no one is going to give that much of a fuck about you to spend money on you.

also, what itstopped already said re: original content

(Anonymous) 2013-03-14 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
da

if you're pissing someone so much they're willing to pay 5 dollars on a stranger, it might be time to reconsider what you are saying and where

sa

whoops, this was for anon above you, sorry

(Anonymous) 2013-03-14 05:15 am (UTC)(link)
As a translator myself, yes, a translation absolutely belongs to the translator and is indeed their original content. If they say that they only want it posted on a specific site, that's well within their rights.

I should add that many translators do exactly the same thing - restrict the posting of their translations to a particular site and ask that it not be posted/distributed anywhere else.
