Shows you had a bad first impression of

(Anonymous) 2013-03-13 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
Have you ever had a bad first impression of a show, but later tried it again, for one reason or another, and came to really enjoy it?

Was it because your first impression was really nonindicative or misleading, or because you just liked it more the second time around, or something else?

The most recent one for me is New Girl -- I watched the first couple of episodes and let it dropped because it just seemed really generic "oh no boys and girls" comedy and I found it boring, but my friends convinced me to pick it up again in season two and now I find it really sweet and fun.

For me New Girl kind of does fall into the generic sometimes, since season 1 it's just been inconsistent in it's comedy. Sometimes it KILLS me and really subverts the normal, but other times it falls precisely right in line with every other sitcom ever.

The Nick/Jess and Schmidt/Cece storylines are the biggest example of where they go into the expected for me. I wish the show was just about them being roommates because I think that's when it's at it's best.

Yeah, I agree. The last few weeks especially have gotten very conventional again, and both the romantic storylines actively annoy me. OTOH, I love Jess and I love Winston so that's enough to keep me around for when the good stuff happens.

Most of the time Winston is my favorite.

Winston is fantastic. Both of his "false identity" storylines (the one where he was Jess's fake boyfriend and the one where he convinced Schmidt he was a secret crackhead) pretty much had me in tears.

New Girl looked so promising at first, I watch 2 episodes, then gave up. Over Christmas, a friend had the DVDs and convinced me to watch it with her, as long as we skipped the bad episodes. Much better!

Happy Endings, the previews just made it look really dumb and not the type of comedy I'd be into, but then I marathoned it and I thought it was hilarious.

I think it's because they were trying to advertise it as a very broad comedy but it's really more along the lines of a quirky one.

Sons of Anarchy is another, I just didn't think think I'd give a crap about a biker show but I love that show it's a great drama.

While 98% of my criticisms against it are still there, I do like Ashes to Ashes more now than I used to. For me, it's the supporting cast that makes the show for me- Chris and Ray get a ton of great development, and Shaz is a great addition.

I watched some season 1 episode of Angel (can't even remember which one it was) and thought it was boring stupid typically stretched-thin spinoff fare. Then a few months later I watched "I Will Remember You" just because I wanted to see Buffy outside of BtVS, and got interested in things in that episode beyond just Buffy, which led to me trying some episodes from season 2 and 3, and I totally changed my opinion. Season 1 of Angel was...yeah, kinda non-indicative IMO. A bit like season 1 of Buffy, actually. Hadn't really figured out what resonance would produce the right tone yet.

Firefly. A friend tried to get me to watch it in 2008; we made it 3/4 of the way through the opening battle scene before we had to pause for something. To this day I still find the battle scene boring, but with that unfortunate pause I thought the entire series was like that. I made an excuse and we ended up watching the Office instead.

I tried it again in 2011 and - after getting through that opening scene - loved it.

Firefly. I watched all the episodes and just...nothing. I didn't dislike it but I didn't really like it either. It wasn't until a full re-watch later, and with friends, that I fell in love. Have no idea why the change.

Teen Wolf is the most recent. My friend was into it and kept trying to get me to watch it, but every time I tried I just could not get through an episode. It was stupid and boring and the waxed chests just bugged me for some reason. Then a bit ago I tried again and for whatever reason I got sucked in. It's still admittedly awful and cheesy and the waxed chests still make me eyeroll sometimes, but I love the stupid show.

Does Red vs Blue count? I tried watching it years ago and thought it was stupid, then recently tried it again because it was free to watch an entire season at once on Amazon instant video prime,(Without the all the irritating problems of trying to watch videos on my crappy old computer.) and ended up watching the entire series. Eagerly waiting for season 11 now.

Buffy. Admittedly the first season was... pretty bad. Got re-introduced to it several seasons later by an ex and ended up enjoying it.

Phineas and Ferb. I just watched a few minutes of the first episode and called it a day. A few months later, I watched a different episode of the show and WHAT IN THIS WHORLD IS THIS CARTOON I NEED AIR.

Now I've got a 150 Dollar Phineas, Ferb and Perry plush looking down from my bedroom shelf. I love overpriced merchandise. XD

I saw a random episode of Fringe, and thought it was just a lame X-Files rip. Whoops. Starting it from the beginning probably helped.

Invader Zim looked like a show about cheese and randumb and an annoying robot that annoying fans quoted all the time. Which isn't far off actually... But I'm glad I gave it a second chance without factoring in the fans.

Thirty Rock. I'd heard that Jack and Liz had this epic friendship. My friend showed me the episode where he gets her to pretend to be engaged to him to make his ex wife jealous, and I thought he was just insufferable. I had to watch from the beginning to see how they're both insufferable, and how that makes it work, lol.

Not totally sure if this counts, but I've always had a bad impression of Star Trek as a whole, mostly due to TOS. Refused to watch it. Eventually, I decided to give TNG a try and realised that, hey, it's actually pretty damn cool. (I've since watched all of TNG, all of Voyager, and am a bit over halfway through Enterprise. Yes, I'm actually enjoying Enterprise.)

On the other hand, I re-tried TOS and still hated it, which is why I'm not sure it counts...
