Oh god. (medical stuff)

(Anonymous) 2013-03-13 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
I just got a medical bill in. And I'm fucking crying. I just can't fucking do this right now. All in all the whole thing costs me $1,500.

I feel so stupid, because I could have denied medical treatment, and I really should have. I fainted and had a seizure while in class, and the medics got called and urged me to go, and I was telling them I don't have health insurance, but they insisted I go anyway.

And I was just so scared and unable to think that I went anyway. And I'm so paying for it, because it wasn't serious, and I only stayed in for like 4 hours and had a single test done, and I'm so fucked.

I am so fucked. I don't have a job, I don't have insurance, and I am so fucked. Oh god.

Oh man, anon, I'm so sorry, that's terrible. *Hugs* You should talk to someone at the hospital and explain your situation. They can probably put you on a payment plan or help you out in some way, and give you some other suggestions.

You made the right choice by going. Seizures can be really dangerous, so don't be too hard on yourself.

+1. :( I'm really sorry you've been put into this situation and I hope they can work something out with you, but it could've been something more serious. It's probably a good thing you got checked out. Do what anon says and speak to the hospital; I'm sure they can set something up.

Anon and [personal profile] elaminator are right, honey. What if it had been serious? Try to negotiate with the hospital.

Definitely contact the hospital. You may be able to negotiate for a lower bill.

I have a 4,000 medical bill for being treated for MRSA. I feel your pain.

What I and the other anons have said on this thread: if you haven't done it yet, try to negotiate for a lower bill. You shouldn't have to pay the maximum for anything.

That is a relatively low hospital bill. Which state are you in? Most US hospitals have programs to "forgive" bills for low/no income patients.

I don't know. I live in MA and they refuse to give me any leeway, lol.

Anon, don't panic. You absolutely did the right thing in getting treated.

One thing that hospitals don't tell people is that bills are often negotiable. The crazy prices are what they charge at the highest, but they get discounted for insurance companies and they can get discounted for you. If you don't have the money, try calling them (or getting an advocate/parent/someone to call for you) and seeing what they can do for you. They might be willing to take a lot less if you can pay something smaller upfront.

If billing is no help, talk to the patient advocate at the hospital. They will likely write it off, or try to work with you some other way.
