Does anyone else feel like they're the third wheel or left behind while everyone else seems to click? I get jealous of even the close-knit friends here, and no one ever seems to remember me. It's probably because I suck at talking about myself or be interesting and appealing.

No, I feel like that too sometimes. But with me I think it's more timidity and paranoia and being totally unwilling to put myself out there.

I am very timid, but I think neglecting to follow up on people who reply to me makes look standoffish. So I don't think I have a right to feel down when they don't reply back to me. Bad logic, I know. I guess I should work on that.

Do you comment under your username often? Are you new? (Because if you're new, you might need to give people some time.)

Also, it seems fairly common for people on the comm to remember userpics rather than usernames and IDK if you use multiple icons, but if you do that could potentially be a problem. ~~I'm a chameleon!~~

As for making online friends...see if conversations pop up in the comments? I think just about every online friend I've ever made started because of commenting back and forth on some community.

Other than that...you can get involved in your fandom like fingal suggested. Even if it's just commentary or text posts, people might take notice.

(Don't be so hard on yourself about the why's, though.)

/finally actually started common law this morning! So cute. Every time I laugh I think of you.

To OP: I think it does help if you make yourself easily recognizable. And contributing something always helps. My sister cemented herself as a BNF in a pretty overwhelming fandom pretty quickly and easily by just putting together a couple of silly fanmixes and coming up with a signature doodle schtick.

And the doodle thing is a really good suggestion, actually. Even shit doodles can be lots of fun and if you have a good sense of humor be sure to include that.

For the longest time (we're talking many months, here) I thought your icon was a fruit with a great big leafy bit still attached on top.

Yeah, this. The only online friends I have I met on F!S. We commented back and forth to each other in threads, then sent private messages to each other, and then IMed each other. Or, I met them through the streams noodles and I do, which is totally a place to meet people, let me tell you. It gets pretty hot in there some times. ;P

a super memorable username helps, but a memorable or cute icon helps even more

oh man about icons, I have this fantasy type dream thing where I wonder if I have a conversation with myself between two icons would anyone notice? Or do people attribute any of my douche opinions to certain icons, and the happy nice ones to other ones, and they think I'm different people???

I don't think you're different people, but...that's an interesting question. I could see how it might be possible for someone who has difficulty remembering usernames to think the same person is actually two people (or more, if they aren't very observant, I guess).

Probably, yea. I still see icons on my phone but some people might not want to, or maybe they have data usage to worry about.

Pssh I feel like that everyday, online and off. But yeah like others said, comment under your username so people can get to know you! Just keep plugging along and remind yourself that you're here for fun, and try not to get too caught up in your negative thoughts of loneliness. Or at least that's what I do.

:( I'm with everyone else on you should get more involved however possible. Admittedly I'm pretty bad about talking to people unless they talk to me first, both irl and online, but friendshipping yourself really does take effort on your part. Work on opening up in small doses with whatever your comfortable with, and take some initiative in starting some conversations.

Also, if this helps any, I remember everyone on f!s. Well, okay, maybe only folk within the past couple of years because I'm terrible, and maybe I don't remember the opinions of those who don't have prolific commenting tendencies, but I tend to remember something about everyone. Probably definitely even you ♥

I'm pretty sure you didn't remember me from 2007 because I took a hiatus from F!S for several years, the exact dates of which I am not sure of. When I did drop back in, I visited very very intermittently just for the secrets. The vote for moving to DW was what drew me back.

I don't even think I was around back then tbh as I only stopped anoning and got a new lj late 2008. It was definitely harder to keep track of regulars before organised comment threads happened. Plus also breaks of months every now and then.

tu has been around forever, but technically only more active thanks to the move then. If I clocked fs hours, I bet my save file is BIGGER than yours \8D/

I feel you! First, let me give you a hug (if you want one).

I'm starting to interact more in F!S, lately, and I totally recommend commenting under a recognizable username + icon. It takes some time, but then you start recognizing other users as well, and making conversation. It's pretty awesome... I was very, very lonely before making an habit of commenting here.
