I had a completely different take on this story. Yuki doesn't necessarily "conform" to society pressures, the movie shows her eventually warming up to the human life and she says so herself that she *wants* to be a human. She knows it's the only way to help her family survive. I think she did the right thing in confessing her secret to that guy who likes her in the end. He's the only one who would accept her for who she was, whereas if she said 'screw it' and transformed in front of everyone she'd scare them all away. She did the right thing in concealing her identity, and helps her mother by doing so.

The point of the story is that the kids choose different paths that make him happy. The ending for the brother is not depressing per se, because he's happy with living in the forest as a wolf. His friends are the animals, so in essence he is not completely antisocial. He clearly cares for his animal friends a lot, and he feels its his duty to take over for his dying fox sensei. In my opinion his ending was just right, if not premature since he is quite young.

The film had a realistic portrayal of how society would treat creatures like wolf-halfbreeds if they ever existed. It's not a negative film, but rather an uplifting one since in the end the children are clearly happy with their lifestyle. The mother is happy for them, too.
