(Anonymous) 2013-03-13 05:05 am (UTC)(link)I understand the moral of allowing children to make their own choices, but I couldn't get over how terrible their choices were. Why did they need to choose 100% human life or 100% wolf? Is there not room for both? Couldn't the boy choose to live in the mountain and come down to visit his family regularly? Who the heck is he howling to, the zero other wolves in Japan?
Here's what I thought would happen -- and what I believe should have happened. When Ame's mentor was injured, he didn't have to die. Ame could have returned to his human form and taken advantage of the incredible human ability to pick shit up and the extraordinary human capacity to heal living things using medicine. He would have realized that there is something impressive about humans, their ability to use ingenuity to rise above their circumstances, something worth keeping in himself.
Yuki didn't have to stay locked-in at school. She didn't have the same limitations that an ordinary human does, and yet she was letting something as frivolous as "not having a car" keep her from playing a significant part in the story. She could have turned into wolf form and taken advantage of her speed to make it home and to rescue the family that she knew was in trouble. It would have been foreshadowed, after all, because she'd saved Ame before. It would help heal the rift between the two, and it would help her remember the exhilaration she felt dashing through the forest as a pup.
Instead, the family was torn apart, gender norms were safely confirmed, and the audience missed out on any kind of satisfying conclusion. What a disappointment for an otherwise good film.
