being in a terrible situation doesn't give people a free pass on treating others (people or animals) terribly in return, though. that isn't going to help anyone, if anything it will just make things worse for everyone involved.

if they overwork their donkey and the donkey dies, then they're screwed because they don't have a donkey at all and they probably can't afford to get another one. now the donkey is dead and their own life is much harder as a result.
