If you'll forgive the jargon, everyone has their Berserk Button(s).

Messed up

(Anonymous) 2013-03-15 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree completely. Some things should not be shipped no matter how hard it's being justified. There was not a single ounce of anything else than paternal love. I've tried, I just can't see it -the bond is so different. And why would people want otherwise? But I guess some people wear their couple goggles so much they become used to it.

Maybe some people like it because it's fucked up? S'all I got.

I didn't even know there was fanfic out there about those two. The more you know.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-15 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I don't ship it, but the father figure/ward romance is not an uncommon trope in literature...

not OP so I don't know but it kind of sounds like mentions of it come up unexpectedly in unrelated fic

Your kink is not my kind and that's okay. Ship and let ship...and scroll fast.

Can we draw a distinction between . . . I want to say between sexual fantasies and romantic fantasies, but that's not really what I mean--there's nothing wrong with romantic fantasies if you know they're just fantasies. But I think there's some distinction to be drawn between the people who masturbate to a fucked-up pairing, then put it aside, and the people who treat it as something to aspire to in real life. (And as much as we want to think the latter consist exclusively of thirteen-year-olds who'll grow out of it, some of them are almost certainly grown adults.)

Seems like you're the one who can't see the distinction in light of the comment you're replying to.

If you mean that I sometimes have no idea whether some fic writer considers something a fun fantasy or hopes to live it out in reality, you are entirely correct.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-16 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
Honestly, that doesn't even come close to being the most fucked-up pairing I've seen shipped. Maybe I've been in fandom too long.

Some people like the fucked-upness?

[personal profile] nyxelestia 2013-03-16 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
I mean, there have been sooooo many more messed up and fucked up pairings (Thor/Loki anyone?) that were popular. As far as I know, very few people, including the actual fans of these messed up pairings, would advocate that kind of romance in real life. But in fiction, well, no one's getting hurt so you might as well enjoy it.

Don't like, don't read.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-16 12:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it bothers me because loving Cosette (as a father!) is so explicitly tied in to Valjean's redemption. Like, Hugo actually states that if it weren't for learning to love Cosette, then he could easily have backslid into being a bad human being. Which is kind of undermined if it turns out it was all just a long-term plan to fuck her once she's older and looks like Amanda Seyfried.

Not that it's not interesting to go to dark places and character interpretations, and not that you can't read Valjean and Cosette as unhealthy. But it's just an interpretation that makes me sad.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-16 03:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I do think Valjean's love for Cosette is a bit unhealthy. In the book, he's rather possessive of her and extremely jealous of her love for Marius, and Hugo says that since he's never had a wife or lover, Cosette fills that role for him. I don't think that means he literally wants to fuck her, but I can see why people would read it that way.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-16 03:49 pm (UTC)(link)
In his defence, though: Marius.

MARIUS.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-16 04:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Haha, agreed.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-16 05:06 pm (UTC)(link)
At least he doesn't verbally abuse her like certain other older man/younger woman pairings I could name.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-16 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm 99% with you, but why do you have a problem with fic mentioning his platonic love for her? Isn't his platonic (well, paternal) love pretty much what the book/play/movie is about?
