Drinking advice? (silliest question evah)

(Anonymous) 2013-03-15 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
It's my sister's birthday next week and we are going to go to a bar after dinner. I have never been to one, and I dislike beer and wine (I do like Irish coffee, tho) so I have almost no experience with alcohol.
I'd like to have just one drink, what would you recommend that won't affect me at all? The thought of being drunk scares me :(

She's suggesting something with Baileys, I was thinking of a Daiquiri? I have no clue about this, share your wisdom F!S

It depends on what the bar is serving. Just ask for lightweight girly drinks--that's what the waiters/bartenders are there for.

One drink won't make you drunk, unless it's straight Everclear. It may have an effect on you, but a fairly small one, and more importantly, not a long-lasting one. Although it depends on what you order and how it's made.

There's plenty of different drinks that combine liquor with sweet-flavored drinks. I'm not really an expert on the topic but yeah, probably just go with one of those and you'll be fine. What you get depends on your taste I guess. But don't worry about getting drunk, you'll probably just get a bit tipsy. Just don't turn into a girl drink drunk: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1_H_sVNgvf4

Daiquiris are fucking delicious. You should totally order one. If it's made right it's just a delicious fruity drink that happens to have alcohol in it. And if you just stick with one you won't get drunk. You might get a buzz, but not drunk and it'll wear off as the evening goes on and you don't drink any more alcohol.

Gin and tonic is usually a safe bet? Single measure, heavy on the tonic. It's quite bitter, so you can just sip it rather than drinking too fast.

I have fond memories of drinking a Piña Colada as a kid, so you can probably get one of those alcohol-free. Or just get it as it is; it's one of those fruity drinks that probably won't get you drunk.

That said, if -- during the course of the night -- you feel like trying something a bit heavier, I personally recommend a Rusty Nail!

Strawberry daiquiris are delicious. Personally I also like plain old Baileys on the rocks, that was my only drink for a good while. White Russians are also beautiful if you like the taste of coffee and cream (sounds like it, since you mention Irish coffee). My favorite is probably Nuts and Berries, which is frangelico (hazelnut), chambord (raspberry), and cream. Very sweet, creamy, tasty but not much alcohol content - so if you want to be extra cautious, that one will really do nothing to you unless you drink it fast, and it lends itself well to sipping.

Or you could just ask the bartender to make you something sweet and fruity, they're usually good about winging it. Have fun!! It'll be great.

Ooh, never heard of Nuts and Berries... something to ask for the next time I feel like a sweet drink, thank you! :D

Get yourself a cosmo. Sex on the Beach is good, but it's so sweet I always follow it up with a shot of something. Seagrams 7, usually (just because it was the first shot of anything I ever had).

Ask for a screwdriver. It's orange juice and vodka. It was pretty much my booze of choice when I was into booze. And no, one drink isn't likely to get you drunk or even tipsy.

Yeah, possibly slightly tipsy depending on weight / recent food consumption / how fast you drink it, but not full-on tipsy.

Strawberry daiquiri is a good choice.

My go to drink is a rum and coke when I go out because you can't screw it up. It's just rum and coke and you can ask them to go light on the rum if you're worried about it (tell them you're driving later or something like that if you don't want to express you don't have experience with alcohol)

Yeah, rum and coke is a good one

It's called 'Cuba libre' (Free Cuba) in Spanish and until now I always wondered how to order drinks like these in English... it never hit me that DUH, you list the ingredients and that's it. *not the brightest crayon in the box* *also, never had to order drinks in English*

I'd suggest a vodka and cranberry. Fairly popular drink, fairly small, and it won't get you laughed at like a Daiquiri will. Also, many bars don't serve the frozen drinks, so it's a nice backup to have when necessary.

Re: Drinking advice? (silliest question evah)

(Anonymous) 2013-03-16 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
Why would you laugh at a person drinking a daiquiri?

Re: Drinking advice? (silliest question evah)

(Anonymous) 2013-03-16 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
I wouldn't, but if you go with serious drinkers, it's considered a teetotaler drink. As in, something for wusses. Vodka and cranberry is slightly more respectable.

You know, you could just order a virgin drink if the thought of being drunk scares you that much. You can get most alcoholic cocktails without alcohol.

If you're not used to drinking one drink may be enough to get you drunk, but most likely it will just make you tipsy. Don't get something with different kinds of alcohol. There's always that one thing that knocks you out faster than others, so sticking to just one type of alcohol (vodka, wine, tequila, rum, etc.) is safer if you're really worried about getting drunk.

If you drink something alcoholic you might want to make sure that you eat something greasy/salty at dinner. A hearty meal makes it easier for me to stomach alcohol - if I only have a light (or no) meal the alcohol always gets to me faster and it makes my stomach churn.

Daiquiris (fruit cocktails in general, though I've only ever had the one) are delicious and don't have too much alcohol. I'd go with that, and it's not enough to make you drunk unless you scull it or you're drinking on an empty stomach, which I don't advise you do.

And if you get reeally easily tipsy like I do, it's a good option with a meal. Have fun, OP!

One cocktail isn't likely to get you drunk, although a strong one will probably make you feel noticeable effects and you might not want to immediately go drive a car afterwards (if you hang out for a while before leaving, you should be fine, especially if you eat something and/or drink something non-alcoholic). You're not going to get blackout drunk or anything, though.

Sweet drinks are a good way to go if you aren't used to drinking. I second the suggestion of just asking the bartender for something not too strong and you could also specify that it should be sweet. Virgin drinks are also a perfectly acceptable option and a virgin cocktail keeps you from standing out as the obvious one drinking only water/cola.

Is low alcohol content your main concern, or are there any drink types you're curious about? Or something with flavors more tried-and-true? For something that's similar to Irish coffee besides temperature, there's mudslides and, as mentioned above, White Russians (creamy, coffee tastes).

Seconding strawberry daiquiris, screwdrivers, and pina coladas as sweet, fruity, friendly drinks.

Just be wary of Cement Mixers :P

One drink probably won't get your drunk, OP. Not unless you're suuuuuuuuper tiny and even then I don't know.

I would stop at one, though.

hmmm as for what drinks are lightest...I don't actually know =/ I would think daiquiris would be on the low end of alcohol content but I could be totally wrong, don't take my word for it.

I hope you find something you enjoy! A martini might be good, especially if you get a sweet one (if you don't like the taste of alcohol).

Also, you can always stop drinking if you start to feel uncomfortable or like it's too much.

And one thing to keep in mind is that even if you don't get tipsy some people (like me) can get sleepy when they drink. It's not too bad after one, if I wasn't already tired, and I can drive with just one (wouldn't with two) but it bears keeping in mind just in case. :)

I hope you have fun with your sister!

I'm not a beer fan either, so my solution for non-liquor alcoholic drinks is hard apple cider. Not that hard, very tart and tasty, and looks like a beer so you don't get weird looks. My favorite brands are Woodchuck and Angry Orchard, but there are a fair amount out there worth trying. There are also some other fruit alternatives, like pear or raspberry ciders.

I'm n-thing the reccomendation for a strawberry daiquiri. Screw the haters. It's sweet and refreshing, and you won't taste the alcohol at all. A tequila sunrise is also good (orange juice, tequila, granadine). Or a piña colada. It depends on what taste you prefer.

Don't be afraid to ask for girly drinks! And if you just take one drink, you won't get drunk. You would, at best, feel more relaxed than before (not even "buzzed"). Just remember to drink plenty of liquid and eat a filling dinner before going to the bar.
