You ever get that feeling where....

(Anonymous) 2013-03-15 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
...you know that, no matter what your show does for its finale, you're not going to be satisfied? You really want it to be awesome, but you know there's no way they're going to fix the messes they made with the rest of the season.

This is how I feel about Young Justice and tomorrow.

[Spoilers] No matter what they do with the all female characters they've utterly neglected, it will be to little, too late. No matter what they do about Darkseid, it's either he's not there and all the buildup was for nothing, or he is there and he's going to get defeated in a single episode by the off-brand Teen Titans. No matter what the plot is, it's bound to fall into the same dartboard-type writing BSG got into, only with everyone claiming, "No, it was actually MY plan all along!" instead of Cylons. I really wanted this show to be good, and I'm going to stick it out to the end, but... gah.

Similar experiences, anyone?

Not with a finale, but with an episode of Star Trek Deep Space 9 - specifically, Far Beyond the Stars. The problem was it's the perfect episode from my point of view - it's like someone decided to make an episode of Star Trek specifically for me. It's set in 50s New York! It's about Golden Age science fiction! It's about the future and race and optimism and suffering! Michael Dorn plays ersatz-Willie Mays, for Pete's sake! I really can't emphasize enough how much all of those things appealed to me, how perfect the whole concept was. How great I imagined it could be.

And the thing was that I knew that it could never live up to my expectations, there was just no way. I honestly can't recall ever having higher expectations for anything, ever - I'm usually kind of a nervous, pessimistic person in general but I just could not hold myself down on this one. And of course it didn't live up to my expectations - it was a good episode of television, even an excellent episode of television, but there's no way it could have lived up to my expectations. I don't know if any episode of television could have lived up to my expectations. I still enjoyed it and it still resonates with me, but I feel like I would have enjoyed it a lot more if I hadn't known what the basic concept was going into it - if I had just watched it cold. But that's not the way it happened. That's life, I guess.

I feel that way about SVU, definitely. They're supposed to have the ~big reveal~ next week of who Olivia's been fucking all season, and there's just no good possible outcome. They don't have the balls to make it a woman, and the potential male love interests range from "meh" to "who?" to "jfc way to ruin the ENTIRE SERIES ASSWADS" so I'm finding it hard to get excited.

Not to mention that it's a goddamn Law & Order, and as much as I live for what little bits of characterization we get with that franchise, even I think this is overkill.

And this isn't even the finale. I can't even articulate how much I'm dreading that inevitable shitfest, especially if it turns out to be the last season.

Oooh, I didn't realize the reveal was supposed to be next week! Based on what I've read about next week's episode, that pretty much confirms what I'd been thinking (although maybe it's too obvious? idk--not sure how much you know/want to know about next week's ep so I don't want to say too much!) and yeah...meh.

I'm also dreading the eventual series finale. I know the ratings haven't been the greatest this season, but for some reason I hadn't even thought about this maybe being the last season. I wonder if they're planning on that with this season's finale just in case? Although the series finale will probably suck no matter how much advance notice they have, so I guess it doesn't really matter much.

I have a ~theory about who it is that's pretty much been confirmed by set pictures from when they filmed this ep (unless those were released just to throw people off...? but I kind of don't think they'd be that smart). I haven't read actual spoilers because I'm hoping I'm wrong, but... 99% sure I'm not.

Oh, ok...your guess is as good as mine then. I was thinking maybe it was too obvious, but you're probably right that they're not smart enough to try to intentionally throw people off.

Not a TV show but I've had similar experiences with certain video game finales. Just knowing that there's not going to be a happy ending for lots of characters and that you can't solve all the universe's problems...

I've made my peace with Invasion and enjoyed it okay, but yeah, its ending won't compare to the pure satisfaction of Season 1's build up and finale, whatever it may be. Everybody felt like they got their time to shine and connect with each other, and it wasn't just The Blue Beetle Show, or the Random Young Hero Show.

(In light of certain reveals about why it's being canceled, I firmly believe that the sudden spike of new heroes mucking up the focus of the writing was basically motivated by "toys! we need more toys!" And the writers had to work around that. Looking back, I'm wondering if that's what happened with Justice League Unlimited.)

Anyway, I've felt that way about Buffy, Angel, Witchblade...I already know I'm gonna feel that way about Naruto. I no longer expect finales to be satisfying, just to wrap things up so I can go back and enjoy the better moments. Like I will with YJ's first season. Mm, team dynamics.

It was cancelled because all successful cartoons these days end around the fifty episode mark. Poor toy sales probably resulted in them getting only twenty episodes in the second season, but it's not why the show isn't getting another season. It was never going to get a third season, and I doubt we'd have received the same style of show had they not known their stories were limited.

Then that makes me wonder again what they were thinking cramming all those new characters into a second season when they knew they wouldn't get a third season to properly iron them out. If you've got that kind of expiration date on a half-hour-an-episode show, it's not the time to get overly ambitious.

Usually when things get cancelled without a lot of notice this happens, sometimes I wish networks would say "Okay, how many episodes would it realistically take for you to wrap this thing up?" Though I know that would never happen.

LOST is a big one because at a certain point in the final season you could really tell they weren't going to resolve a ton of plot points, I LIKED the Lost finale, but I still think them saying "OH but it was about the characters!" was a total cop-out and just a way of saying they really didn't know what they were doing with the mysteries.
