makes it very difficult to actually have discourse. But I don't think Tumblr is the kind of site where you should be expecting a lot of conversation to begin with.

That's my biggest tin-hatted fear right there. It's not that everyone is moving to Tumblr, it's that Tumblr makes it nearly impossible to carry on a decent conversation. No, I take it back, it makes it nearly impossible to carry on a conversation, flat out impossible for a decent conversation. I'm still trying to figure out how exactly Tumblr RP works.

I'm still trying to figure out how exactly Tumblr RP works.

Very...oddly.

For individual RP blogs, there's a lot of text post reblogging and tagging with the blog name of the person you're calling into a thread (since most people on tumblr track their own tag).

For games, there's some of that too, but they also have their own RP tags, which are frequently #rpnameopen or an abbreviation of the RP name if it's too long. RPs with plots have separate tags for events and specific facets of those events.

Really freakin' confusing, in other words. But all the actual RPing is done in reblogs of text posts. (Albeit sometimes threads will start from someone doing comment reply to a short post, but they'll be text reblogs from there.) Also sometimes there are pictures, like how LJ RPers use icons for emotion indicators.

I used to be part of a Tumblr game and the vast majority of the actual RPing was done over AIM. Person A would make a text post on their Tumblr, Person B would reblog it, this would go on for maybe two or three more reblogs, and then the RP would be moved onto AIM. Group posts were done the same way. Once in a blue moon an entire thread might have happened on Tumblr, but we were mostly encouraged to keep most of the RP on AIM.
