tl;dr GoT is disappointing

(Anonymous) 2013-03-15 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
So, I just started watching Game of Thrones after making it up to nearly the end of A Feast For Crows. I'm on season 1 episode 5 now.

What the fuck? So far I'm not feeling any of the love that everyone apparently has for this show. The reason I even decided to read the books in the first place was because now there was this "amazing" series that I "had to watch" and I'm the type of person who can't watch a movie without having read the source material first (unless I didn't realize it was based on a novel or something).

Does it start getting better or something? Advise me, anons.

Depends what you don't like about it, I would wager.

Well, damn near everything at this point. I don't like how they've changed some of the characters (Cersei, Catelyn, Joffrey), I don't like the weirdly cheap-looking production values, I don't like the dialogue changes and I especially don't like Roz.

I hate how the Dothraki look. I can't stand Dany's actress. ...I could go on.

You've become a book purist. Which is fine, but you shouldn't keep watching then. No need to torture yourself.

For me it didn't. I was kind of lukewarm about the show in the beginning, and now that I've watched both seasons, I'm still kind of 'meh' about it. Not amazing, but a good way to waste an hour.

I watched season 1 as it aired until the last one or two eps and I never like it. I tried to read the books after that so maybe I'd be able to get into the show (it's my SO's favorite, otherwise I wouldn't have put that much effort into trying to like it). I didn't like the first book any better and didn't finish that, either. I think GoT (and ASOFAI) is just one of those things you either love right away or never like at all.

OP

That's not true for me, actually. I felt pretty ambivalent about the first book until about halfway through. The second book really hooked me.

So far the show isn't really living up to any of it, but I guess I'll have to see if that holds out to the point where I actually started liking the series.

I think it definitely picks up as it goes along, but otherwise it's a strong series and I think it's very good.

It's less likely for you to like it if you decided to read the books right before watching the series, because you'll end up getting annoyed they aren't making the 1:1 adaptation you have in your head.

da

Yeah, I've learned that watching adaptations before reading the original books/comics/whatever tends to be better. Like you said, otherwise disappointment ensues.
