wtf?

I am soooo not seeing the problem with this. Actually, I think the first is hilarious. What's wrong with painting your skin to pull off a costume? I'm brown and I painted my skin white for Halloween because I was as a Geisha, and another time because I went as Blanche from The Golden Girls. And I know countless people who paint their skin every color imaginable when they cosplay at conventions. What is the problem?

The only thing I'm iffy about is the Ghandi one because it's, well, Ghandi. But it's not something I'd go all ~RAGE MONSTER~ about. I mean, fuck, people actually dress up as Jesus. What's the craze about?

Read it (and most of the comments), and I still stand by what I said. I suppose, to me, it all comes down to intent (among other factors). I don't think Haynes was trying to portray or send out any kind of hateful message. I think he was dressing up in a costume and painted his skin that color to play the part, not unlike what I did when I went to a Halloween party with my skin painted when I went as a geisha and an old white woman.

Perhaps Haynes didn't think there was anything wrong with what he did because his intention was to simply dress up with no nefarious purposes whatsoever.

And yeah, I get that in some situations the whole blackface thing is really fucking gross, but if you're just painting your skin to look like someone/a character for Halloween, then once again, what is the problem?

I had a friend who painted his skin brown when he went as < href="http://images1.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20090525163808/bleach/pl/images/0/00/Tousen_kaname-1-.jpg">Tousen Kaname from the anime Bleach at NY Comicon, and no one gave him shit for it. He was just dressing up.

Thing is, even if there is nothing inherently offensive in coloring one's skin to augment a costume, it's not very hard to figure out that a lot of people find it very offensive. Why do it? To start a fight? To argue for the principle that coloring one's skin is not offensive? (No one will listen.) In service to the totality of your artistic vision? Under some circumstances, I think complexion altering can be acceptable, but there's going to be a fight, people will be offended, you'll be accused of nasty things you probably didn't mean, and there will be hurt feelings all around. Why even go there?

However, actors aren't the only ones who go there anyway: http://www.nytimes.com/2013/02/26/nyregion/hikind-defends-wearing-blackface-to-purim-party.html?_r=0

I absolutely agree with this, I've never quite understood the outrage about this either - or maybe not specifically this, because I know nothing about the background of this particular case, but dressing up as someone and painting your skin in general. I'm not white either and I wouldn't find it offensive as long as the intention is to just play the part instead of offending of course. Idk, I guess I just see it differently, but I feel like you can really exaggerate things jfc o.o
