That's what I read, but then again, it's still a little baffling because as you say this is made by Japanese people for Japanese people - as far as I can tell, the art styles are the same, even if the flags on top of their heads aren't. And I have never even heard of this series before, so there could be an obvious element to it I'm missing as well.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-16 01:46 am (UTC)(link)The characters themselves are both fairly standard archetypes, but the Japan and the west both reacted very differently to them highlighting their specific flaws.
Nandeko is really unpopular in the west, and Shinobu up near the top of the polls, whereas the opposite is basically true of Japan. The secret seems to be suggesting the reason for this differing reaction indicates something to note.
