Re: Since SJW discussions are in vogue these days

tbh, i've noticed more sjw scorn being directed towards religion rather than atheism.

as though it's kind of... trendy? not sure if that's the right word... to be anti-religious. and it's fashionable where i live at the moment to just stick crosses on everything and wear rosaries to be ironic.

(but take that with a large truckload of salt, since i'm religious myself.)

Can we not with the "atheism is trendy" thing? Because reducing someone's sincerely-held religious position to a fashion trend is really insulting and minimizing. It kind of reminds me of the whole "bisexuality is trendy" thing, reducing a genuine part of someone's identity to a fad.

i don't necessarily agree with the comment you're replying to but atheism =/= anti-theism.

I know this is kind of a late reply, but I'm sorry if I caused offense!

I wasn't trying to minimize atheism (or theism), nor was I trying to imply that people were simply becoming atheists as a way of following a fad. Most people think long and deeply about their personal philosophy. I certainly don't think people become atheists just because they think it's cool or something.

What I was commenting on was more a general feeling of "anti-theism" that I've noticed has become more prevalent among young people. (An understandable sentiment, given a lot of problems within the church at the moment.) The re-using of religious symbols makes it appear to be "fashionable".

(OT but the "bisexuality is trendy" thing makes me rage, so I get where you're coming from.)

uh

I'm a Christian and I don't think people wearing crosses because they think they look nice is offensive. A person's faith is seen in all aspects of their life, not just wearing a necklace with a symbol on it. That's such a minor thing. My sincerely held religious position cannot be reduced to a token on a chain.

And how is that in any way related to bisexuality? Religion is a choice; sexuality isn't.

Anti-religious sentiments are nothing new. Perhaps the particular manifestation you're seeing is in vogue right now, but people - teenagers, especially, I've noticed - seem rather drawn toward antitheism. Not atheism, mind, but an actually "rail against the (religious) establishment" sort of mindset - it's been around since at least the '60's when teenagers and young adults started saying "fuck you" en masse to their parents and the beliefs of the older generations.

Active, exuberant anti-theism has been around a lot longer than that. It was just kept out of the public sphere or hidden in coded language, because for most of recorded history it got you locked up or murdered.
