I don't know what it is about the "in an ideal universe" part, but it is really sad that we even have to apply that sentence to so many aspects of the net and IRL. What you said should just be a given- that you don't go attacking people for shipping A/B (at least not in public or to their faces; it's another thing to have a private forum for "I hate ship A/B" where if an A/B shipper goes there of their own accord, it's their own fault).

It just reminds me of how ... accessible the net is getting these days. Not saying that the days before Bookfase/Tumblr/Myspace/All those other things that made the internet usable for people who like that kinda thing were better. I'm saying that now it seems like we have to make a lot more allowances for rude mofos and eejits. Allowances like "in a perfect world, you could have a forum and enjoy yourself and your ship without being harassed". It reminds me of how in school, a few of us went to the teacher to complain about the students in class who were always talking and muttering during lectures. Teacher's answer was "well there will always be people like that, you have to learn to deal with it". You know what I mean? It's like no! Why should decent people who are following the rules have to cater to unacceptable, idiot behavior? Why do people who follow the rules have to make allowances for people who are breaking the rules willfully and knowingly? It'd be one thing if they couldn't help it or if they didn't know better, but if they don't have the excuse of not knowing any better... then what the hell?

So, I guess I'm saying I agree with you and understand, and the rest is just me being miserable about people who just... just why?. Just why would they behave like that? Maybe the argument could be made that "I can't find any material that suits me because they generate 90% of my fandom's activity and I'm annoyed and when I say they're polluting my fandom, I'm speaking out of pure emotion without thought", but even then,.. yeah, I guess that as usual, a lot of this could be solved if everyone would ask "what do you mean by that". But we "don't have time for that", I guess.
