How does her being a hypocrite justify slut-shaming?

(Anonymous) 2013-03-16 07:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Nobody's saying slut-shaming is right.

If you look at celebs, many have had more relationships that Taylor. Most of them don't get slut-shamed because they're okay with that and other people doing that, whereas Taylor's whole schtick is that she's the Madonna and "other girls" are the Whore, and of course people are going to call her out on her hypocrisy when she dates like five million guys.

I wouldn't call her one, but isn't she a slut by her *own* standards?

I don't even see how the two are related. She's talking about the desperate scrambling sort that defines themselves by a relationship with others.

Going on lots of dates and sleeping with people is separate from that. not everybody who does that does so for that reason. Some people just like going on lots of dates and have sex early on. It's about how you feel about yourself and your motivations, not the tally count.

So unless you have a magic mirror into her thoughts, you can't really say "Aha! Hypocrite!"

Um...
No, she's pretty much proved that she defines herself by the relationships she is in because of how she is NEVER without a boyfriend, except the short period of time in-between where her whole shtick is about how much of an asshole they were in her new song.

I don't actually follow Taylor Swift in anyway so this might be true? *Shrug* Sounds like the sort of thing her haters would say though.

Naw I'm a fan and that's pretty much accurate

she's constantly in a relationship. She gets with guys and stays for a few months, tweeting about how incredibly in love and new she feels, and tweets inspirational quotes and writes love songs.

Then they break up.

She writes angry fk you breakup songs about never getting back together. She hints at the guy she just broke up with.

Then she's in love again.

It's a cycle. Honestly, it's an annoying cycle that's making it hard to be her fan. It wouldn't be so hard, and I wouldn't mind so much, if she wouldn't constantly be like "Oh I hate those girls who always have to be in a relationship" or "I'm not one of THOSE girls, you know" etc.

A mirror. Get one.

I like her music - and make it a point never to go looking for information beyond that - but I hear enough anyway to make me cringe. But I keep going back to her age - same deal with Justin Bieber, all the jokes about how people would shoot him if they could - they're kids. The songs I wrote in my notebook at that age were embarrassing too, I just thankfully didn't have anyone filming me when I sang them.

Her image is largely crafted around her relationships with guys, though, both while she's dating them and after she's broken up with them. No one should be calling her a slut, but she is a hypocrite.

nah, that thing anon quoted is the least of her offenses. i can't be bothered to google exact lyrics, but she wrote some song about some real life girl called Camilla something (google taylor swift camilla actress if you care) basically straight up slut shaming her and how shes 'best known for wat she does on the mattress' or something. and then a theme of a bunch of her songs is another girl being a tramp when its not clear that girl is an emotional mess, just that she's popular with boys taylor likes.
